It seems politically, Oregon splits almost evenly into two different factions. The western half is more bohemian and liberal, while the eastern side is more rural and conservative. Yet both sides agree on education. The Beehive State is packed with all manners of scholarships for deserving students. Enrolling for online classes lets students learn from the comfort of home while saving additional money.

Because of this incredible diversity, the state put together the Oregon Student Access Commission (OSAC). One could call this agency a clearing house, matching up the right student to the most appropriate financial aid program(s). The OSAC does come with two key prerequisites. The first is that one must be a resident for several years; the other requiring on to apply for the state's Opportunity Grant. The advantage of the latter is that it can add an extra $1,500 to $4,500.

Applying For Financial Aid Programs

The Ford Family Scholarship Program is a good example of one of these charitable groups. It actually is four different plans, covering students from high school to grad school. First up is the Scholars Program . Last year, it handed out anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000 in renewable scholarships/fellowships to 120 different students.

Single parents should pay particular attention to the Ford Opportunity Scholarship. If they meet the Foundation's need and academic criteria, 35 students also get $1,000 to $25,000 a year. The ReStart Program is for students who had to drop out for one reason or another. The money provided here is given to help them get back into college. Finally, there is the Sons & Daughters plan; it awards up to $3,000 for two-year students and $5,000 for four-year students.

Look For A Scholarship Opportunity

Another association known for providing a number of different plans is Oregon's local Auxiliary of the American Legion. Its awards aren't quite as large as the Ford Foundation, but they do make a difference. These plans include the General Grant ($1,500 annually), the National's President's Scholarship ($500 to $1,000), the Nurse's Scholarship ($1,000), and the Spirit of Youth ($1,000). The last is only open to women. For all of them, one must be either a veteran or direct descendent of a servicemen. Look for a scholarship opportunity today and pay less tuition.

For students planning STEM careers, there is the Oregon Space Grant Undergraduate Scholar Program. It's an array of plans depending on what school, the field of study, need, and grades. Scholarships can go to as much as a renewable $2,000 a year. Post-graduates should look out for the Graduate Student Award. It is open to students of education, social work, environmental, or public service. They must attend an in-state program. It will provide $500 a year to those who meet the qualifications.

Another clearing house is the Oregon Community Foundation Scholarships (OCF). Like the OSAC, it administers a number of scholarships; some say as many as several hundred of them. While the awards at the OCF may not be as large as the OSAC, they can add up, particularly in these current times of constantly escalating education costs.

So whatever your leanings, it is hard to argue the value of the OSAC and OCF. They are insuring Oregonians get the financial backing they deserve. Looking for financial aid scholarships allows students to pay less out of pocket.
