Your Lens is 100%, Now What?

A checklist for lens greatness!

Congratulations. If you're landing on this lens, chances are it's because your own lens is already pretty darn good. It probably reached a 100% score on the new Squidoo progress bar that measures the 'completeness' of a lens from within your Workshop.

That feature looks at basic elements of a lens, like Introductions and tags and topics and whether your modules are empty or not, as well as a few extra things like how many visits your lens has gotten, and assigns a completeness score to the lens. For your eyes only. As an indicator of what's left to do. And it's not all that difficult to do everything on that progress bar checklist and reach 100% completeness.

But completeness does not necessarily equal quality. Anyone who's crafted a lens as good as yours already knows that no lens is ever really finished and there's always a little ongoing love, care, updating and moderation to be done.

So for you people who have have reached 100% completeness on some of your lenses, here's a way to keep overachieving and stand out from the crowd.

Your Squidoo Community Organizers worked hard to organize this checklist of 12 things you can do right now to take your 100% lens over the top and into the next realm of greatness.
Important!

100% is overrated

Here's how you can go above and beyond and make truly excellent, high-quality lenses that have a strong shot at success.

1. Take a bow

Share your lens within the Squidoo community

Every great lens deserves a round of applause and yours is no different.

If you've made friends here on Squidoo, or you've dipped a toe in to the SquidU forum a few times, then you know there's a network of lensmasters eager to see what you've published. Go ahead and share your work with them every so often.

Don't think of it as bragging. Think of it as sharing your lenscrafting expertise with the Squidoo community and setting a great example for others to follow.

2. Feature yourself

Use the featured lens module

Add a Featured Lens module, or a My Lenses module, to show off your 100% lens on any other similar topic lenses you have. The more you relate your lenses and link them back and forth, the better.

3. Make your lens even more thought provoking

Add another poll or duel module

It's human nature to be passionate about the things we love and people love to voice their opinions about everything and anything so why not give them another chance to do that (while also spending a little more time on your great lens) by adding another question, or by starting a debate with one of Squidoo's two most popular interaction inspiring modules?

Keep in mind that even the silliest of topics can inspire thought provoking questions.

Which Duck made the better sidekick? Donald or Daffy?
Should people who reside in Delaware be called Delawarers or Delawarians?

A lens that contains lots of interaction by way of polls and interesting debates has a greater chance of acquiring repeat visitors who want to stop back to see if their views match up with the next guy's.

On top of which, after someone comments in your Duel or Poll module, she's prompted to share the debate with a friend. Think of it like free word of mouth...

4. Make your lens more helpful

Add some new links

Every single day there are literally thousands of new bits of information being added to the web by way of articles, blog posts, new sites and pages. Make sure your lens contains all of the latest and greatest links on your topic.

5. Get the word out

Promote your lens outside of Squidoo

What good is an excellent lens if no one can find it?

Sure, Squidoo is a powerful publishing platform but if you want your lens to soar into the stratosphere (and get lots of targeted traffic) you're going to have to give it a helping hand.

'Promotion' can feel like a dirty word sometimes, so we prefer to think of it as sharing, generously, with people who want to hear from you.

Post it on Facebook, and Tweet about it.
Write a blog post about your new lens.
Or collaborate: find a niche blogger who might be writing about the same topic and find your lens useful.
And email it to some of your friends (but only if they're interested in the topic!) for feedback, and see if they might help get the word out too.

The more places you can find to shout about your super terrific lens the better.

6. Add another photo or two

There's always room for another great picture

A picture can speak a thousand words (and make your lens look darn pretty too) so why not find, or even go out and take, another photo or two to add to the awesome collection of cited photos you've already posted on your lens?

Swapping out old photos with new ones in your Intro module and throughout your lens is a great way to keep your 100% lens updated and fresh looking.

7. Keep your eyes and ears wide open

Add new information as it comes to you

As the expert on your topic it's up to you to be on the lookout for new information, ideas, and advances being made that you can write about and add to your lens today.

Don't put it off until tomorrow. Be quick to report any news or cool facts you find.

Your lens doesn't need to be a catchall on your topic, and it's better if it's NOT featuring everything plus the kitchen sink. But thoughtfully updating your lens with relevant content or comments is the mark of a pro.

8. Share your secret for success

Help out your fellow Squids

Write a blog post or start a SquidU thread sharing how you successfully achieved a 100% lens. Break down your story into 5 tips to help other lensmasters take their progress bars to the top!

9. Nominate your lens for Lens of the Day

There's no better time than now to nominate your 100% lens

We're always looking for well crafted lenses full of unique, useful, and updated content to feature as Lens of the Day.

Show us yours!

10. Check out the neighborhood

Look for other lenses and lensmasters who share your interests

SquidLike other lenses on your topic, or go comment (kindly and uniquely) on them. That's a good way to find another lensmaster who is writing about the topic you both love, and help him or her find you in return.

11. Check, check, and check again

The best lenses have lots of eyes on them. Make sure you're extra proud of what they see!

Double check your lens for originality.

Double check your lens title: Is it accurate, does it read like a human wrote it, and is it interesting? Or does it read like a keyword stuffed phrase, or have typos, etc.

Check your module titles, too, and make sure none of them are generic.

12. Keep your lens updated

Stop back often for a look-see

Just because you have a 100% perfect lens today doesn't necessarily mean it will still be that way a year or even a month from now. The web loves updated content, and shirks stale.

Links get broken, products get removed from the marketplace, news gets old, and photos can become outdated quickly online. Be sure to stop back and take a look at your 100% lenses every so often to double check that everything is still working the way you intended it to.

I was just honored to receive my fourth or fifth 100% lens on "Have You Ever Wanted To Trade Plants? Here's How!" I've been seriously publishing here for around a year now. It seems that the lenses that have achieved this status are on the subjects I am most passionate about. One of my first 100% lenses is called "HarrySchnauzer." He died after a woman who adopted him from my rescue placed him in a city shelter, and I found out too late to stop it. That's passion. That broke my heart.

I'm passionate about my plant trading lens because it is something I truly love and I know what I'm talking about from lots of experience. I guess what I'm trying to say is that sure, we can be true experts, go through the steps and be mechanically perfect in our lenses, but what really makes them shine is passion. Just my two cents:)
