History of the Cheese Steak
As the story goes, the steak Sandwich was invented in Philadelphia in the 1930's by a hot dog vendor. The original sandwich consisted of only thinly grilled steak and grilled onions on an Italian roll. Some years later the sandwich was enhanced by the addition of cheese. It is not clear which type of cheese was added first but provolone and white American are two possibilities. In the 1950's when Kraft invented Cheez Whiz it became a favorite choice of cheese steak lovers. These three cheeses are still the most popular. Today there are many variations on the cheese steak. The pizza steak, chicken cheese steak and mushroom cheese steak are just a few. The Great Philly CheeseSteak Book
