Very interesting -- and congratulations on making the top 100... food for thought for my college-age son.

I used Chegg in 2009 and had a wonderful experience, these comments below are kind of scaring me into not using them for my Spring semester 2012.....
  • jakealoo Jan 5, 2012 @ 1:14 pm | delete
I wouldn't let the comments scare you away. They have had tons of good feedback but I accidentally cleared all of the old comments a while back. Plus the rare few who have a bad experience are the one's who go out of their way to post a negative comment.

Your experience should be consistent with that of what you had in 2009, the company has only increased their standards since then. Also be sure to grab the 5% off coupon posted on the top of the page.

Best of luck to you Jenna,

On the savings table above comparing the campus bookstore to bookrenter, are you comparing rental prices side-by-side or the costs of buying new textbooks from the campus store to renting at Chegg? If the latter, you should truthfully give an example as many college campus stores now also offer book rental programs--with the convenience of students being able to pick up and drop off as well as the pricing being pretty competitive, especially once you factor in time and costs for shipping. ALSO, yes, Chegg plants a tree everytime a book is sold back etc but they are a mail-order business. Think about this, how do you think the books are shipped to and from Chegg? Either overaland truck or airplane--both which require large amounts of gas and other petroluem based products (think of tired made out of petro based compounds, oil/lubricants etc). Besides consuming fossil fuels, their business model also relies on shipping that pollutes the atmosphere and water. Just my two-cents…

These are certainly some valid points you present Jimbo about the shipping of the books. But regardless, books will need to be shipped to schools and with Chegg, books are being reused which cuts down on the need for new book production(paper and other materials). AlsotTheir efforts of planting a tree for every book rented is a way of trying to balance the environmental externalities resulting from their shipping methods.

Thanks for your insightful comment Jimbo!

    Best,

I used to swear by Chegg! I loved them. Now I try to discourage anyone from using them. They've gotten really expensive! I don't know if it has to do with internet cookies, but when a person first signs up and using them, the price is almost always cheaper than can be found elsewhere. But the more you use them the more expensive the books are. I was really embarassed the last time I recommended them, I told a friend to check them out online, my friend seen that I paid $111 to rent a book, the same book was cheaper to rent from our bookstore on campus. I got ripped off by Chegg...never thought that would happen, really am sad!

I am very disappointed with chegg.com. I ordered 2 books from them and they only sent me 1 of them. then when I called to talk to them about it they said that I was past the 21 days to give a complaint and I need to buy the book. I'm never using them again.

Watch out of Chegg. They choose, not you, the return date, and this date is early, like before the semester ends. With past orders, I called to let them know I needed more time. I was told no problem, that they basically give you about a 10 day grace period. So, when the due date came this time, I figured everything was okay, since they give me 10 days. Not so. They billed me $23, which I do not have. When I called, they told me they had never heard of such a grace period. They also told me they had no choice but to bill me this $23 and if I didn't get them in, they would charge me another $23. Funny thing is on another account we have in my family, they did the same thing. My dad called and they backed out the charge. Interesting that they would not do that for a girl. We have used Chegg for years, but apparently they would rather gouge you for $23 than keep you a happy customer. Just be warned.

I had previously ordered from Chegg and had no problems, but the last time I did was an absolute nightmare. I ordered around $250 worth of books, but somehow my account was charged without my order ever actually processing. I was robbed of $250 without any books to show for it, and every time I talked to a Chegg representative they told me my account would be refunded within 10 business days. I constantly kept calling, yet my money was not refunded until 3 MONTHS later. It was an absolutely ridiculous situation, and the customer representatives were horrible. I will never be using Chegg again.

You will undoubtedly be charged a late fee and they are not waiving those anymore but choosing to nickel and dime people with late fees instead of keeping them as long-term customers.

Chegg is great, save lots of cash, plant a tree. It is a great concept. As a student that’s been around the books a few years now, I can tell you that it is not worth buying books. Those $200 books will not be used again, trust me. That’s the best part about Chegg. You already have the box to send them back in along with the printable sticker to put on that beautiful orange container. If you were ever unfortunate enough to buy those $200 books, try selling them to Chegg. They are always looking for more books to rent out to students, and their prices aren’t a rip off like most bookstores on campus. Please use my coupon code, CC128960. Don’t be fooled, everyone’s coupon is only 5% off your order, nothing even close to 10% or 15% let alone 80%. And everyone’s coupon can only get you an extra $5, nothing more. So, it is up to you to choose, and may you choose well. CC128960

Chegg is awesome! I've saved over $400 for this semester alone! It beats the hell of buying books that will only be used once.

I have used chegg for about a year now and it has worked out great. There have been a couple books that I decided to just buy myself instead of renting from Chegg. It is wise to look up the used prices of the books you need before your decide to rent. The rental price could only be a few bucks less than the used price. In this case I usually just buy the book instead. Thanks for the Chegg promo code and the great review.
