The Role of Chelation Therapy in the Treatment of Coronary Artery Disease

What is chelation therapy?
Chelation therapy uses chelating agents (a chelate is a particular kind of bond) to remove heavy metals from the body. It is an intravenous treatment that uses a solution of vitamins, minerals and a synthetic amino acid (EDTA) to cause the mobilization of toxic heavy metals such as lead, arsenic and mercury, abnormal calcium, and excess iron, which can increase the risk of hardening of the arteries. EDTA, (ethylene diamine tetracetic acid) has a strong attraction for heavy metals, escorting them out of the body where it is excreted in the urine.

The presence of heavy metals in the body causes an increase in the production of free radicals in the body. Removing these heavy metals, which are toxic, is thought to prevent and even reverse tissue damage caused by vascular disease.

EDTA and other chelating agents such as DMSA, DMPS and ALA are used in both conventional and alternative medicine in the United States.

Chelation Therapy
Chelation therapy is not only an excellent treatment for symptomatic cardiovascular disease, it is also the most effective preventive tactic in asymptomatic people. It should be started by healthy men in their late 30's and women in their late 40's.

A Brief history of chelation therapy.
Chelating agents were first used for medical applications during World War I when researchers at Oxford University in England developed their own chelating compounds to help counter the effects of poison gas exposure from the war.

Again during World War II chelating agents were used to treat military personnel who suffered lead poisoning. But then something interesting started to happen. Patients who were taking chelation therapy as treatment for heavy metal toxicity and or lead poisoning also began to experience relief from their symptoms of heart disease, blood vessel disease and improved blood flow to the heart, the legs and the brain.

What is Chelation Therapy?
Chelation Therapy is an intravenous treatment using a solution containing minerals, vitamins and a special (man made) amino acid (EDTA) This solution, through complex biochemical action at the molecular level, has the effect of removing toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic. It also causes the mobilization of abnormal calcium some of which is excreted via urine and bile and some of which is re-circulated with the possibility of being deposited in bone. EDTA also removes excess iron, which has been shown to increase the risk of hardening of the arteries.

TACT Trial - National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the NIHMedical researchers began to conduct studies about the efficacy of chelation therapy. The US National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is currently conducting a trial which is studying chelation therapy's safety and efficacy for patients with coronary artery disease. The NIH is conducting this study because of the belief that chelation therapy may treat heart disease, but this has not yet been scientifically proven. Past studies, which were relatively small resulting in unconclusive findingss why this study is important.

Science Overcomes Outside Influences

"The Investigators running the trial believe the attacks are politically motivated but are taking the allegations very seriously. They have agreed to suspend recruitment in the trial until the allegations are disproved and are confident that they will be disproved," reported by the Australasian College of Medical Nutrition.

ACAM continue to work with Dr Tony Lamas to answer the unfounded allegations of impropriety. "We believe that the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) will find that the allegations are of a political nature. To serve the best interests of participants enrolled in the TACT trial and all patients and their physicians who seek answers about chelation therapy, we call for a swift end to the moratorium and resumption of the trial," said Jeanne Drisko, MD, President of ACAM

Study of Chelation Therapy Should Not Be Abandoned

Beth Clay's article in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons is an exciting look at all of the players and exposes the intrigue behind the delay. "An important clinical trial has been hindered by publication of an agenda-driven 51-page article in MedScape, despite the lack of expert qualifications and known bias of the authors, and the fact that most authors derive income from legal compensation for testifying against medical professionals who use chelation or other alternative or complementary therapies in their practices. Investigation of off-label uses of FDA-approved drugs is essential for progress in medicine."

The use of EDTA as a chelating agent for patients with coronary artery disease has not yet been approved by the FDA, although the therapy is used by some alternative medicine practitioners. Chelation therapy using EDTA has been approved by the FDA to detoxify the body of heavy metal poisoning and further studies are ongoing. ClinicalTrials.gov - Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT)

WHAT DOES EDTA ACTUALLY DO?
When an EDTA solution is injected into the bloodstream, it surrounds calcium ions in the blood and quickly takes them with it through the kidneys into the urine. The body then mobilizes calcium, some of which comes from hardened arteries, joint linings an other stiffened tissues. This process may even stimulate new bone growth for those who have weak bones (osteoporosis). Reports in the literature show that EDTA may reduce clotting, improve cholesterol and lower blood pressure. It must be emphasized that these mechanisms are the way we think that the therapy works. There have not been any large double-blind studies that have proven these mechanisms.

The theory is that as the hardened arteries get softer and more flexible, more blood passes through. Diagnostic tests in our office taken before and after chelation (such as vascular analysis and thermography) have shown that areas of impaired circulation are often improved or even restored to normal function.

Chelation Therapy TACT Trial is Enrolling

What are the Criteria?

Have you ever had a heart attack?
Are you age 50 or older?
If you answered 'yes' to these questions, you may be eligible to take part in a large international study of an alternative treatment-chelation therapy and vitamin therapy-for people with heart disease.

Why is this study being conducted?
Many people are considering using chelation therapy because of the belief that it may treat heart disease. However this has not been scientifically proven. Past studies did not show benefit, but may have been too small to be conclusive. That is why the National Institutes of Health is conducting this large study to find out whether chelation therapy is safe and effective in treating heart disease.

Are there any side effects from the use of EDTA for chelation?

TACTThere have not been serious side effects reported since chelation has been used for medical purposes in the 1940s, and it should be considered safe when administered by a ABCMT (American Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology) board certified physician.
Chelation therapy is used by CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) practitioners along with other medical therapies for coronary artery disease.

What began as a treatment for the treatment of heavy metal poisoning is emerging as a potentially effective treatment for coronary artery disease. Physicians are administering it to their patients before heart bypass surgery and if they get good results may not have to resort to the surgery.
