What makes the Cheltenham festival Special?
Why I think its great!!
It is a great feeling when you hear the roar of the crowd as the tape goes up for the first race.
Though there is nothing better than when your horse climbs that final hill in front, its a great adrenalin rush when your horse wins one of the big races.
The friendly rivalry between the English & the Irish racegoers coupled with the party atmosphere of St Patricks day make for a great time.
I enjoy arguing with & trying to convince my friends what is going to win each race & the smug feeling I get in the times when I am right.
All this coupled with four days of betting opportunities make for a great festival.
And then there's the Racing action................
Some background to the Cheltenham Festival
A quick guide
Traditionally the Cheltenham festival festival was a three day meeting but due to its popularity, an extra day was added in 2005.
There is a strong England vs Ireland theme with bookmakers holding markets on which country will train the most winners.
The festival generally falls around St Patricks day & this seems to add to a good friendly atmosphere.
Every race features a top class field but the 4 biggest races (one each day) are:
The Champion Hurdle
The Champion Chase
The Gold Cup
The Stayers (World) Hurdle
The 2008 festival will be run between Tuesday 11th March & Friday 14th March.
Using Trends at the Cheltenham festival
Ten Year Trends
We can apply these stats to the equivalent race in 2008 & narrow the field down to the horses that fit these stats.
For example, 9 of the last 10 champion hurdle winners had won their previous race. Therefore it makes sense to concentrate only on those horses that won their last race prior to 2008's champion hurdle.
This makes sense because if a horse cannot win its prep race prior to cheltenham, why should we expect it to win one of the 4 top championship races at the festival.
Our Site will be carrying all the main trends for the festival, you can see them via the link below.
Cheltenham Festival trends 2008
General cheltenham Trends
When looking at non handicap races, stick with horses that won their previous race.
In handicap races, we should not be as concerned about a win in a horses previous race, weight & experience in big fields is generally more important.
Gold cup 2008 - A one horse race?
Is Kauto unstoppable?
However, Kauto star replied with a hugely impressive win in the king george and now rightly stands as outright favourite for the Gold cup.
If you are looking for the banker of the meeting then Kauto star is surely it.
