The Cheltenham Festival 2009

The Cheltenham Festival is the United Kingdom's biggest national hunt racing festival. The event is held annually at Prestbury Park in Gloucestershire and features 25 national hunt races run over the course of 4 days, including a number of the season's most prestigious hurdles and steeplchase races.

The Cheltenham Festival boasts some of the highest attendance figures in British racing, with an average of 50,000 spectators packing the grandstands at Cheltenham Racecourse for each day of racing. The popularity of the Cheltenham Festival is partially due to the fact that the meeting represents the annual showdown between the Irish and English national hunt fraternities.

A Brief History of the Cheltenham Festival

According to Cheltenham Festival history, the inaugural Cheltenham Festival was held in 1902. The meeting originally featured only flat races, but by 1904 the first steeplechase had been added to the Festival and proved to be a resounding success. In 1924 the first of the festival's championship races was contested when Red Splash won the first Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Three more championship races were added to the Cheltenham Festival in the 20th century as the meeting gradually evolved into the most important event on the national hunt racing calendar. In 2005 the Cheltenham Festival was extended to run over four days, with five additional races added to the event.
