Where Are Salsa Classes In Cheltenham?

Would you like to learn to dance salsa and live in or around the Cheltenham area? Then this might just be the page for you...

This lens looks at some of the classes in the region and suggests where and when to go for a good night out or to learn.

What Is So Special About Latin Dances?

Should I Be Learning Something Else Instead?

The reality is that most salsa teachers will, from time to time, teach other latin dance moves to keep their classes 'fresh'. In other words, we all need to offer something exciting from time to time.

Most classes will at some time or another also include some modern jive, cha cha cha, bachata or merengue. Each has a different style and flavour that will literally keep you on your toes!

However, it is worth noting that you probably will not find any style of tango lessons in a salsa class. They will almost always be separate.

Why Learn To Dance?

Is It Worth The Effort?

Dancing generally - and salsa specifically - is a great way to:

> Get some exercise. At first it won't seem like much, but as you get better at salsa, you work harder
> Meet new people. Most classes are constantly on the move - if you'll forgive the pun - and before long, you'll have met most of the people in the room
> Improve coordination. Learning to put your feet and hands in certain places at certain times is a good way to improve overall coordination. Having '2 left feet' shouldn't be a barrier - we can all get better
> Have a good night out without alcohol. If you aren't much of a drinker and want a fun night out, salsa is ideal. Most salsa dancers are not drinking - they are too busy dancing - so you won't be alone
> Improve flexibility. This goes without saying, but dancers - even bad ones - become more flexible. It can happen to you too...

What If I'm Single?

Can I still take part without a partner?

The answer is a simple 'Yes'. Most people found in salsa classes go alone - as it were - and the environment is not dominated by couples. Far from it, in fact.

If you just happen to be male, then this is especially good news for you.

Why?

Most dance classes have many more girls than boys. Sure, if you are hoping to meet girls, that is great news. But if you want to learn to dance, you will not be short of partners. Females can sometimes find themselves standing about waiting to be asked to dance, whereas guys are generally in high demand.

Plus, most women view being able to dance as a 'lifeskill'. Even if you are rubbish on the dance floor, they will love you for trying.

So give it a go!

What If I'm A Beginner?

Can I still give it a try?

Of course!

We all started somewhere - usually unable to move in any direction at all! So don't fret, we all understand what you are going through.

Most - if not all - salsa classes are designed with beginners and the more advanced in mind. Most will have two classes running at once. This means that beginners can get a few basics under their belts whilst the more advanced are spinning each other around!

Once the classes are completed, there will usually be some 'freestyle' time so that people can just have a dance and do their own thing. Most classes - though not all - ask the more experienced dancers to have at least one dance with a newcomer to help them along.

There is really only one way to find out whether you will enjoy yourself ... come along and give it a try!!

What If I'm Shy?

Will people be nice?

We can't speak to everyone, but generally, people in salsa classes are very friendly. It is a fun and enjoyable atmosphere and that lends itself to being nice.

There really isn't any reason to be fearful or nervous about going to a salsa class in Cheltenham or anywhere else.

Hopefully, it goes without saying that if you are going to spend an evening in very close proximity to other people that your basic hygiene should be good. But other than the occassional faux-pas, everyone gets along.

Once you have joined the throng, you can too!

It may just unleash your social life...

One unusual thing to note though, is that because of the nature of a salsa class, you get to meet virtually every member of the opposite sex in the room - but hardly anyone of your own gender. I have been to classes where I know all the ladies very well - but have bever spoken to other guys that also go every week. It is just a peculiarity of dance classes.

What If I'm More Advanced?

Will there be something for me as well?

The answer to that question is a resounding 'YES'. Most salsa classes in and around the Cheltenham area have a 'freestyle' session or two. This is where the better dancers get to strut their stuff.

In these freestyle periods, there will usually be some music played that is designed for bachata, merengue and cha cha cha. In other words, you'll get your chance to shine!!

Avoid Facebook Identity Theft
It seems that most salsa classes now use Facebook as their main methods of promotion to members - above even email lists! This link offers some suggestions to help keep you safe while on Facebook.
