My Chemex coffee maker

There are many different ways to make coffee, but since my fiancee introduced me to the Chemex coffee maker many years ago, it is the only way that I make coffee now. Before then, I used an automatic coffee maker, which was convenient, but the coffee hardly ever turned out the way I liked. I later found out that one of the reasons why it tasted so bad is that it was easy to burn the coffee on the warmer plate; and it often didn't need to sit very long to start burning on the plate.
The thing that I like most about my Chemex coffee maker is that I can get consistently great coffee out of it, now that I am practiced at using it. And I think it is esthetically beautiful to look at, with its symmetrical glass design and simple wood cuff for handling the carafe.

Brewing with the Chemex

One downside to making manual drip coffee with a Chemex is that it is very slow, so if you need your coffee in a hurry this may not be the best method for you. I don't mind a slow brewing method though, since I think coffee this good is worth waiting for.

The method for brewing is very straightforward; just place the filter in the top funnel, put your ground coffee in and add hot water. The amount of coffee used for brewing will be subject to taste, but the general recommendation is about 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of hot water. Keep in mind that Chemex coffee makers consider a cup to be 5 ounces, so if you are using a measuring cup you will have to adjust the measurements. Here are some videos that I found showing the technique for brewing coffee with a Chemex:

Where to buy a Chemex coffee maker and parts

I bought my Chemex coffee maker at Peet's coffee, which for me is a local chain of coffee stores; and that is where I pick up my filters. If there isn't a Peet's or other coffee venue that carries Chemex items, you can buy all of the things you need at Amazon: a carafe, filters, replacement parts etc. You can also get books on how to make coffee and coffee recipes.
