Cherries and cherry juice are some fruits that can help dealing with gout.

Gout is a form of arthritis characterized by sudden onset of pain, swelling and stiffness to a joint. It usually affect the big toe, but can also be localised in the ankle, knee, foot, hand, wrist and elbow. Organs, such a skin or kidneys can also be affected. It can affect both male and female, but is more prevalent among male, and usually starts between 30 and 50 years of age.

Cherries and cherry juice are some foods that can help dealing with gout.

Got gout?

Got cherries?

In a 2003 study from USDA's Human Nutrition Research center from the University of California, researchers found that consuming 280 grams of cherries for breakfast caused a 15% reduction in uric acid levels.

Consumption of cherries and its products has been reported to be health-promoting, particularly to alleviate arthritic pain and gout. Clinical case reports of patients with gout have shown that consumption of one-half pound of cherry products daily for 3 days to 3 months reduced plasma urate (the metabolite in plasma largely responsible for gout) to normal levels and alleviated attacks of gouty arthritis. It is not known what compounds in cherries might be responsible for these alleged actions.

In this study the plasma urate (uric acid levels in blood) went down, and the urinary urate (uric acid excreted by the body through urine) went up. Here's a chart made from the study results Photobucket
These indications show that cherries can be effective against gout. Markers associated with inflammation also showed improvements. All forms of cherries have been showing a beneficial effect against gout.

So, can cherries cure or prevent gout attacks? Well, it depends. Gout attacks aren't triggered at a specific level of uric acid. Some people have high levels of uric acid and don't have attacks. Some people with lower levels may have recurrent attacks. But for some individuals, a 15% reduction may be well enough to reduce uric acid levels below their personal threshold and prevent an attack.

Best Gout book

Getting Rid of Gout
Here is the best book on gout I've got for you.
Anyone suffering from this traumatic arthritic condition will fully appreciate the new edition of Getting Rid of Gout.

Here's what it will do for you:
The book provides dietary guidelines, including current research on the role of diet in preventing gout, and a description of the new medications available for its treatment. Getting Rid of Gout offers sensible advice and dispels the popular fallacies about the nature and causes of gout.

Bryan Emmerson, a recognised authority on gout, argues that if control of the elevated concentrations of uric acid can be achieved through either diet or medication modifications, gout attacks will cease and there will be no further complications.
