For many years I have had a Japanese friend who told me how the whole of Japan looked forward to the Cherry Blossom, when everyone would go out into the parks and streets and celebrate the cherry blossom by getting together and sitting under cherry blossom trees enjoying a picnic.
This traditional cherry blossom festival in Japan goes back to the 7th century.
In Japan, the cherry blossom festival is known as Hanami, and the cherry tree is the Sakura.
The cherry blossom season in Japan begins in January in Okinawa, and goes through to June, with the peak time for cherry blossom parties being the end of April and May.
