I've always been fascinated by Chess pieces. I do not play very well, but I absolutely love chess sets.

As a sculptor, I'm drawn to the more non-traditional chess sets -- animals are among my favorites -- but I'll show you a wide variety of chess pieces and boards so you can decide your favorite.

One-of-a-kind Chess Set - Lions vs. Dogs

I am a sculptor and I have created a chess set of Lions vs. Dogs. I sculpted the pieces in clay and finished them with stains, acrylics and waxes. The set sells for $1295.00. Common Chess Terms

Here are some common chess terms that might come in handy.

Blunder: To totally miss something obvious, giving the benefit to the opponent.

Patzer: A player who cannot seem to improve his game, though he has played for years. A patzer is blundering all the time.

Opening: The first 10 to 15 moves of the game. This is the first phase of the game.

Middlegame: The second phase of the game, where most of the action takes place.

Endgame or Ending: The last of the 3 phases of the game, when only a few pieces are left on the board.

File: a column in the chessboard.

Rank: a row in the chessboard.

Wing or Side: The board can be divided into 2 vertical halves: the queen's wing or queen side (including files a-d) and the king's wing or king side (including files e-h)

Check: To threaten the opponent's king.

Checkmate or Mate: To threaten the opponent's king, so that it has no escape. This ends the game.

Stalemate: A player is stalemated if he has no valid moves at his disposal, but he is not in check. The game is drawn in the case of stalemate.

    I used to play chess online rather than playing face to face. I think I need to get me a unique set to make me play more for real. Interesting lens.

    Love chess but now don't play it much. My six year old grandson is almost capable of beating me so I gave him my chess set which is similar to the Staunton one pictured above. Blessed and featured on Blessed by Skiesgreen 2012 and also on Games for Young and Old. Hugs

    My kids all played chess in school and I saved all their sets. I thought I had a big collection until I read this lens. Wow, you really highlighted some amazing sets. And I can't believe the prices some of these sets are fetching on ebay. Really amazing. Thanks!
