Chestnuts are great to snack on and bake with

 

Although they can be a challenge to get out of their shell Chestnuts are worth the effort.

It is best to roast Chestnuts as some people do have a reaction to them.  A unique feature of the Chestnut is the sharp outer coating they have.  I have gone barefoot too many times around the chestnut tree.  This is the Chestnuts defense for animals from eating the seeds before ready to open.  Once the seeds fall the pods will fall, do not step on them OUCH.  

To create a humane barrier from critters around the garden you can put Chestnut husks around the outside of the garden using thick gloves.  The little animals will just get a little prick or jump over them.  Its an old timers tip
