Chevrolet Camaro - Chevy's F-Body Answer to the Mustang

The Chevrolet Camaro was created by General Motors to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Mustang fell between a traditional sports car and a comtemporary car. General Motors did not have any cars that matched up well with it from its introduction in 1964 until 1967. The Corvette was too sporty and too expensive, the Impala was not sporty enough and too expensive, and the Chevelle was a pure muscle car; too much power for those who preferred the Mustang.

The Camaro was the perfect car to fit in between the Chevelle and the Corvette in Chevrolet's lineup. It was less expensive than the Corvette, while more refined than the Chevelle.

The F-body platform was introduced in 1967. That was the first year of sales for the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. The design used in the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro would be used again in 1968 and 1969. 1970 was the start of the second generation Camaro. There have been a total of five generations of Camaros. The first year Camaros, along with the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro and 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, are most cherished by car collectors.
