Chevrolet Corvette - Greatest American Sports Car
Ranked #6,282 in Cars, #344,535 overall
The Story of the Chevrolet Corvette
Introduced in 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette is America's longest-running sports car, and also it's most popular. Compared to the exotic sports cars imported from Italy and Germany, the Corvette is downright cheap and offers the most bang for the buck.
While it may be lacking the eye-catching looks of a Lamborghini, the cornering ability of a Porsche, or the luxurious features of the Ferrari, the Corvette is a pure driver. For those who like speed and aren't millionaires, the Corvette is the car that belongs in their garage. What the Corvette lacks in luxury it makes up for simplicity. The engine might not be as advanced as a European exotic, but it's a lot cheaper to maintain, and any car nut down at the local repair garage knows how to work on a Corvette engine.
There have been plenty of limited edition and specially-tuned Corvettes through the years. The 400 horsepower LS2 and 505 horsepower LS7 were two engines that are revered among all Corvette fans.
America's favorite sports car has gone through a total of 6 generations. They are identified by a C followed by the generation number. For instance, the C1 started with the first Vette in 1953 and ended in 1962. The 1963 split-window Corvette was the first Vette of the C2 generation, and it's particularly popular with collectors.
The Z06 is a performance Vette produced for recent generations. There are also rumors that Chevrolet is working on an SS version of the Corvette.
