Chevrolet

Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet. Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry, by Don McLean in American Pie, and Treat me like ya Chevy by Cherish, are just some examples of how deeply rooted Chevrolet is as American Staple.

I even remember when I was growing up when the Chevy Nova Super Sport came out and how everyone wanted one. It was slick, fancy and wow what a car. It road just as sweet as it looked and it made you the envy of the neighborhood.

Everyone wanted one. My sister and I would fight to get into it quickly, so that we'd would get to sit where we wanted. It was a time when seat belts usually weren't worn, and you flew down the highway with the windows and the radio up.

Those were the days! If you had a Chevy, then you were in and everyone hit you up for a ride. By the time the Nova's hit the market, Chevrolet was already the American manufacture for cars and trucks that everyone trusted.

It was well known that if you owned a Chevy, that you had a strong, reliable car, that was trustworthy and would get you where you wanted to go. But what exactly is the history of Chevrolet? When and how did Chevrolet get started? If you're going to trust a car, you should at least know it's history.

Chevrolet's History

As you can tell from the song lyrics, Chevrolet's are also know as Chevy's. Chevrolet's were named after their founder Louis Chevrolet, who started the company on November 3, 1911.

There is discrepancy as to who else founded the company along side Chevrolet. Names mentioned are William Little, Edwin Cambell and Cambell's father-in-law William Durant. Chevrolet was initially located in Michigan.

Those first years as with many companies was very turbulent. In 1915, Chevrolet was incorporated as Chevrolet Motor Company of Delaware by Durant. Chevrolet removed Durant from management of General Motors after 5 years. In 1916, Chevrolet owns 54.5% of the company and Durant boots Charles Nash out of the Presidency.

Not long after the founding of Chevrolet, the company was acquired by General Motors in 1918. The purpose of General Motors for acquiring Chevrolet, was to have direct competition with Ford and their Model T in the 20's.

It was not uncommon at that time that Chevrolet a.k.a. Chevy was considered synonymous with General Motors.

The real growth for Chevrolet began in 1924. The first GM vehicle were made in another country outside of the United States and Canada, was made in Copenhagen and it was a utility truck.

From there, the rest is history. Chevrolet's Popularity continued to grow and grow. Chevrolet is one of the few companies that has endured the ups and downs that come with economy, wars and competition. Chevrolet has been around 100 years.

Fun Facts

Everyone knows how wonderful Chevrolet's are, but here are a few fun facts from a site called Fun Trivia. Check out these fun facts and see how many you know.

The name Impala came from what type of a native African animal?

gazelle/antelope. I wanted to include at least 1 very easy question. The Impala is a very quick running Gazelle-type of a creature native to Africa. Although, some might agree that the Elephant might better describe some of the early to mid 1970s full size Chevrolet's! If you are like me you love them all anyway!

What is the commonly believed life span in miles of the Astro?
300,000. The Astro commonly lives to 300,000 miles and above before the engine needs to be replaced.

What pony car from Chevrolet was built to compete with Ford's pony car, the Mustang?

Camaro. Chevrolet brought this muscle car onto the market in 1967 and sold it saying the name meant Comrade in French, but other linguists translated it to Spanish and said that Camaro meant a type of shrimp.

What were the two main design design changes between the 1967 and 1968 model-years?

The side vent wing windows were eliminated, and side-marker lights were added.. Thanks to "Astro Ventilation," General Motors eliminated the side vent wing windows on the 1968 Camaro and also added federally mandated side marker lights. Mechanically, the most significant change was the adoption of staggered rear shocks (one in front of the rear axle, one behind) to counteract wheel hop under hard acceleration. The 1967 Camaro is the only Camaro that had a triangular vent window.

There you go, just a sample of some fun facts about Chevrolet's and a little comparison from other cars. Hope you enjoyed them.
