Like many Washington DC area suburbs, Chevy Chase is an unincorporated area. Unlike many other suburbs, it is really two places. Because it straddles the D.C. line, there is a Chevy Chase DC and a Chevy Chase MD. The DC side "feels" a little more like city living. The real estate in Chevy Chase DC tends to include more townhouses and smaller lots. In Chevy Chase Maryland, lots tend to be larger giving way to more "estate-like" luxury homes. Having said this, there are exceptions to the generalization on both sides of the D.C. line.

Both Chevy Chase Maryland and Chevy Chase DC offer a considerable amount of charm and both have residential areas that abut commercial districts, so there is an opportunity to live in a location where you can walk to shopping and restaurants and have quick access to public transportation. This is especially true of the Connecticut Avenue corridor in D.C. and the Friendship Heights neighborhood (which actually is in both Chevy Chase Maryland and Chevy Chase DC along the Wisconsin Avenue corridor). One of Chevy Chase Maryland's claim to fame is what is lovingly called "The Rodeo Drive of the East" -- a newly constructed shopping area in Friendship Heights with high end boutiques and great eateries.

Chevy Chase History

Chevy Chase was unincorporated farmland in the years before 1890, during which time Senator Francis Newlands and his partners began the aggressive acquisition of land in both southern Montgomery County, Maryland and in Northwest Washington, D.C. Their original purpose was the development of a residential streetcar hub for Washington, D.C.
