The old ways won't work anymore. This crisis is an opportunity for those who have new ideas.

The ability to innovate will determine the successful companies in the next decade. This lens explores the resources and ideas about creativity as it  contributes to innovation in business and professional services.

About Creativity

from Fast Company, by Mark Vamos

"The World Economic Forum at Davos has a theme every year, and the theme of the January 2006 meeting was ''The Creative Imperative,'' the idea being that business leaders and society as a whole need to come up with new and creative approaches to change..."

Popular with the audience were "Ideo's Tim Brown and Google's Marissa Mayer. Their respective arguments: Brown stumped for the beginner's mindset, and for the virtues of rapid prototyping. Being or thinking like a beginner lets you approach problems in new ways, lets you make connections that haven't been made before.

And rapid prototyping lets you test those insights quickly and at limited expense.

Mayer argued for a ''healthy disrespect for the impossible,'' combined with the virtues of constraints. A healthy disrespect for the impossible means you can take risks, while constraints--a price point you have to meet with a new product, a specific design problem you have to solve-- mean your risk-taking will follow productive avenues."

Not All Innovations Are Equal
by Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble discuss their new book on Harvard Business School Working Knowledge website for business leaders:

"There is no shortage of published ideas on how best to manage innovation. Empower employees. Encourage initiative. Cultivate risk taking. Overcome mindlessness such as, "We do it this way because it has always been done this way." But managers need more than such generic advice because there are many different kinds of innovation, and each requires a profoundly different managerial approach...."
