Awesome list--and don't forget poetry, especially Carl Sandburg's "Chicago" that's all about the "City of the Big Shoulders"! I really loved his poetry in high school.

I love all of Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski novels which are set in Chicago. These mysteries really give the reader a feel for the unique character of the city. One of the recent books in the series, "Hardball", focuses on Chicago politics.
