Tips To Make The Most of Your Opportunity to Talk With a Lawyer

Before seeking an appointment for legal services:

  • Gather together all letters, court papers, and government documents related to your situation; and, make copies of each of them to give to the lawyer at your appointment,

  • Make a list of all service providers with whom you have either discussed or written to about your situation, include their names, addresses, and telephone numbers. Service providers might include social workers, bookkeepers, accountants, counselors, business consultants, etc.,

  • Write a statement summarizing your situation and outlining exactly what it is that you hope that a lawyer will be able to accomplish for you and when you hope that it can be accomplished,

  • If you expect to seek legal services from agencies with financial guidelines, gather together documents showing your income and financial situation, these might include your W-2's and 1099's from work, your tax returns, a statement summarizing your debts and your property, etc.
