Pyramids of Chichen Itza in The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico
Chichen Itza is the most famous of Yucatan Peninsulas Mayan sites, in Mexico and the best restored. First settled in Late Classic Period abandoned in about 9th century resettled in 10th and finally abandoned in 14th century. Chichen Itza has regular, steep sided pyramids with steps that can be climbed, running up the middle of each side in a beautiful setting that can really transport you back to ancient Mayan times. The site is easily accessible as a day-trip from the beach resorts of the Yucatan Peninsular, although there are also a few good places to stay right next to the site.

PLaces to Stay in Chichen Itza
Hacienda Chichen

You can get to Chichen Itza from Merida, by bus, then walk through the archeological site to the hotel: Hacienda Chichen. This was where the archeologists lived, their bungalows now form some of the accommodation. Big lazy lizards wander around the garden. It is only a couple of hundred yards from the Chichen Itza site, quite peaceful once the coach parties have gone back to the Yucatan beach resorts and probably the perfect place to stay.

Chichen Itza

The site was far cooler and more pleasant, with fewer tourists at 8am when it opens, than mid afternoon, with most people arriving at 11:00 to 15:00 in huge coach-tours. It is also fun to visit in the evening, preferably after a couple of enormous Margaritas at the hotel to prepare you for the evening light show: entirely in Spanish with English headphones doing a poor job of translating. It was mostly laughably bad, but nice to see the pyramids illuminated.

- What a cool place. But fair warning....its easy to climb up, but it looks almost straight down and terrifying to come down...do it anyway.
(Read about why is has to be almost a straight drop in Cows, Pigs, Wars and Witches.)

- This lens is awesome. I love it. I am going to tell my editors on my Thai News website to write something about this lens and probably feature it.
I will comment here again once we do.
Great Work
