Ranked #10,621 in Pets & Animals, #274,438 overall

Building a backyard chicken coop will be one of the best investments you'll ever make.

I grew up on a farm and have seen and built many a chicken coop.
A hen house is built for chickens as well as other fowl. This will ensure that they have a shelter and a place to feed with out interference from predators. Inside there are roosts for the chickens to sleep on and there will also be nest like boxes where the chickens will lay eggs. The inside and outer base of the chicken coop is usually covered with an organic material such as straw, wood shavings or sawdust to control the chicken manure. This will also make it easier to clean out the chicken coop. Some kind of ventilation must also be supplied. Typically chicken coops smell.

When constructing a chicken coop you may need to get a permit. Make sure that some design rules are followed when constructing a backyard chicken coop.

We have chickens in our grounds here in the UK. We have two coops that we built using chicken coop plans http://www.chickencoopsx.com and our hens are productive layers. Nothing beats having fresh organic eggs every morning. Together with fresh bread from our bread machine having our eggs from our back yard is just a great start to the day. Do it - build a coop today you will not regret it. More power to this lens encouraging people to do it. We did it and if we can build one anyone can - it's super easy.

We can have 3 chickens but no roosters in the city limits of Portland, so this would be awesome! I have 5 different neighbors that have chickens.
