Try and make a sketch of how you would like you coop to be. Work out the height, width, roof shape, run size, windows, doors etc. Work out the colors you will use and how you are going to decorate your coop.

Now imagine this in your backyard. Work out how much of the coop will be visible to neighbors or others. Will the roof be visible over the fence, do the colors blend in with surrounding environment or does it stand out, will there be drainage issues, will the coop get sunlight, is it located near a water outlet.

Try and think of every possible issue you may have. When you have worked out the outside issues then its time to sit down and design the inside.

When you try and design the inside try and see it from a chickens point of view. What would she like and what issues may she face.

Here are a few to start with.

Chicken Coop Plan Must Have Ventilation

When you start your chicken coop plan it is essential to add in ventilation. Ventilation is neccessary to let in fresh air as well as let out the toxic build up of amnonia, carbon monoxide and moisture.

In cold cold climates you will need to make sure that the ventilation does not create air drafts in the coop for the chcikens.

Chickens need to remain dry, if they don't they suffer from health issues and many times they can also suffer from frost bite.

Insulation in the walls will also help keep the moisture away as well as keep the coop nice and warm for the chickens.

Speaking of walls, the chicken coop walls should have proper insulation installed which will help keep the chickens dry. As long as chickens are dry, they can handle cold climates very well, but humidity plus cold weather will cause health issues for your poultry. Therefore, insulated walls are a must!
