Chicken On A Beer Can

Hardly a week went by this past summer where I didn't grill a chicken on a beer can. Not only is it a killer way to fix the chicken, but it is as easy as as it gets when it comes to cooking.

There were several times between Late April and........well...yesterday, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door...wait...wrong bird, wrong tale.........

Cook Beer Can Chicken Easily

....because the right bird is a chicken, and a beer can by proxy would be the correct tale.

That's right, all you need is a beer can, chicken, a grill, and a friend or two for some good eatin' fun. Well, I did say beer can by proxy and what I meant by that is that I use Mountain Dew instead of beer.

The significance of whatever liquid you use is the fact that the drink will steam and send the moisture to the inside of the chicken during the grilling process. The end result is a juicy, tender bird on the inside while the outside is crispy golden.

I have tried several types of canned drinks; beer, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, water, to name a few. In the end it was Mountain Dew that won me over for good. One bite of the juicy sweet meat is all anyone should need to understand that choice.

The same process was used looking for a 'rub'. The first two or three I used rosemary. The unique flavor of the evergreen herb certainly added a delicious flavor to the bird, but I had to strike out from there and experiment. I finally landed upon lemon peel or "zest". I discovered a wonderfully blend of zest and the sweet flavor of the Mountain Dew to be the perfect treatment for my pallet. Apparently my friends feel the same way, because I didn't have to buy the chicken at least 3 times this past summer.

What You'll Need

  • 1 grill ~ large enough to hold a chicken standing up while the lid is closed

  • 1 whole chicken ~ 5 lbs. is about perfect for 2-3 adults

  • 1 can of Mountain Dew ~ 12 oz.

  • Lemon peel or "zest"

  • 1 beer can chicken rack

  • 2 clean hands ~ Salmonella is really not nice

  • About 2 hours

Something Easier Than Beer Can Chicken?

Okay, maybe T.V. Dinners are easier than chicken on a beer can, but you won't hear me say, "I'll have what that guy is having."

What's On Your Grill?

It seems that everyone looks to the man, or some guy to be the expert on the grill, and that man is generally known to be able to cook up one thing better than anyone else around.

What is your grilling specialty?

Everyone looks to me for grilling.......

mysticmama says:

I grill everything...thanksgiving Turkey, Christmas Prime Rib...and I live in Minnesota...it's not unusual for me to be firing up my barrel smoker when it's 20 below zero out lol

I hand the spatula over to someone else because they can cook a mean.....

Ramkitten says:

Grill? Me? I don't even know how to turn the thing on. Nah, I can cook over a backpacking stove (I make a mean Ramen noodle), but grilling isn't my forte. It's all about the mustached man on this one.

tandemonimom says:

Are you kidding? OF COURSE grilling is the man's job! He makes great steaks, too!

Mickie_G says:

Well, my HUSBAND's specialty is pork chops. And chicken, too--he is the designated boner (as in boning chicken! haha--I know what you guys were thinking here) for the grill.

I'm going to give this a try - I've always wanted to make "beer butt chicken" but now I'm going to try it with Mtn Dew and lemon zest. BTW - you need to fix that clearspring widget thingie that doesn't work any more. Enjoyable cooking lens - I laughed out loud at the comments on your video. Very nicely done!

I enjoyed reading this lens and watching your video, Alex. What a great idea, I would never have thought of steaming the insides of a chicken with Mountain Dew (although I have heard of chicken marinade recipes that make use of 7-up!) *blessed* for originality and lensrolled to my Turbo Chicken lens. (:

Hm, I'll have to ask the man to start buying beer in cans instead of bottles so we can try this.

What a great lens, Alex! I loved the video and I agree with Mimi you sound like Patrick Swayze! The chicken sounds fantastic...I'm gonna have to try it.

Never have tried this, and though I'm not a beer drinker, I must say I'd cook it with beer before I'd try the Mountain Dew! LOL!

I love making chicken this way... I use ginger ale and baste with a nice pineapple teryaki sauce...yum

We tried the beer can chicken without a stand. Must get the stand. We also had trouble finding a "can" of beer. Our kids are bottle beer drinkers. Me, I like artsy beers that are hard to find in a can.

Will "generic" store Mt. Dew work?

    Thanks for this fun lens.

Perfect! That looks like some mighty fine chicken. We are having ourselves some grilled chicken today too. Great video, Alex.
