Me and My Chihuahua, Boo Boo

I never thought I liked chihuahuas until I actually owned one. Actually, my husband bought her and now I don't know what I would do without her.

I always feel safe if I'm home alone with Boo Boo. Boo Boo is her nickname. Her real name is Lady Abu. She is a long haired chihuahua, even though both her parents were short haired. So we feel that makes her even more special.

I know that nothing or no one would ever be able to sneak up on me with Boo Boo around. She is like having an alarm system in the house. And it doesn't matter how big a person or animal is, Boo would attack it to save me or my husband.

I then started doing some research and found some interesting facts and fads about chihuahuas that I would like to share with you. So read on for some really fun facts, pictures and even some video of some cool chihuahuas.

A Little History About Chihuahuas

There are a lot of theories about where the Chihuahua originated from, but it is believed that they were first found in Pre-Columbian Mexico. It is believed that the dogs were bred with a mix of the Techichi and a small breed dog brought from China by the Spanish Conquistadors.

Some believe these dogs were actually bred as "alarm dogs". And if you own one, you can see that this theory makes a lot of sense.

The chihuahua is also believed to be the oldest known breed in the Americas. The modern day chihuahua is now much smaller than it's ancient ancestors but with this breed, believe me, size does NOT matter.

The chihuahua we know today was discovered in the 1850's in the town of Chihuahua, hence the name.

Our Chihuahua's Favorite Toy

These are great if you are looking for a toy for your chihuahua.

These are actually found in the cat section at the store and our chihuahua can't get enough of playing with them. She chases them all over and we are always buying them as she likes to chase them under furniture. When we moved we collected a bunch of these under appliances, couches, etc.

Chihuahua Appearance and Care

Chihuahua's come in many different colors but some general characteristics are as follows:

They are a small breed dog usually weighing no more than 11 or 12 pounds at the most and are usually much smaller.

Their hair may be long or short with colors varying from solids to marks or splashed.

They have very large dark eyes and their ears are erect.

Chihuahua's need expert veterinary care, especially when they are puppies. This breed is also prone to seizures, as most small dogs are. The chihuahua is born with an incomplete skull and must have strict care for the first 6 months. If a veterinarian is not used to treating chihuahuas, this disorder may be confused with a disease called hydrocephalus. Therefore, you should make sure you take your chihuahua to a vet experienced with this breed.

This breed must also have strict care when it comes to birthing and dental. They are usually picky eaters and care must be given to ensure they get the proper nutrition, but without overeating and becoming obese.

Dog Food: The Shocking Truth

The widespread disease and death of dogs from nutritionally inadequate and poison-laden commercial dog food is no secret in the world of vets and dog experts.

Help Save a Chihuahua

The Society was formed to alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we continue to battle cruelty today. Whether it's saving a pet who has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse or sharing resources wi

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to ASPCA from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.
