Preparation for your Chihuahua

Preparing for the arrival of your chihuahua puppy can take some time and this lens will help you with that process. The first few months of a puppy's life are critical--this is where they will learn all of their training, so remember, your life may be disrupted for a small amount of time, but the friendship that will build and the obedience your chihuahua will learn will be priceless.

That's what this excellent book covers, from communicating with your dog to solving common behavioral problems, to getting into the little guy's head to see how he thinks. Highly recommended for anyone buying a small dog.

Review your house from a puppy view and see what items if any, should be moved until training has taken place. All of the items in your house will be new to your chihuahua puppy and they are very curious!!

Crate Training

The first decision you should make is to crate or not to crate your chihuahua. There are different thoughts on crating-though you should always remember you should not be getting a puppy to have it locked away all day and night.

A crate is designed to "watch" your chihuahua puppy for you when you cannot be there. A crate is also a big help when it comes to housetraining your new chihuahua puppy. Puppy's will not eliminate in the area that they sleep (for the most part), unless of course, an extended time period has gone by.

The First Few Months...

In the beginning months a puppy will have to elminate about once every 3-4 hours, and gradually as they grow that time period will extend.

If your chiuhuahua puppy is in the crate for longer than that time period, you will be forcing it to eliminate in the crate. This is not recommended. When this occurs consistently, the puppy will learn that it is okay to relieve themselves in the crate.

A crate is ideal as it allows you to run errands, such as going to the grocery store, and not having to worry about your new chihuahua puppy getting into something they shouldn't. It is also a great tool to use at night when your family is in bed, to keep the little one out of trouble. Please keep in mind, when you first bring your chihuahua puppy home there may be whining and crying through the first few nights. It may be the first time the puppy is sleeping alone, or the puppy might be used to sleeping in a bed with the owner.

The Importance of Socialization

Socialization is key to having a friendly, confident, outgoing chihuahua. Consider having a puppy party when you first get them to familiarize your dog with different people. Have each person enter one at a time to get them used to people coming through the door to visit!

Dogs aren't easy! The fact of the matter is they require work, and you need to educate yourself about your dog and breed before you make the jump to have one. If you already have a dog, it's important for your dog's health to read up on what the dog requires in terms of exercise, food, training, what health problems it is prone to, and what you can do to help. What's that saying about an ounce of prevention?

This book simply and easily lays out everything you need to know about the world's smallest dog breed, from preparing your home for your new chihuahua to preventing common behavioral problems.

Read up!

There's plenty to know about owning a pet, and keeping yourself educated about the breed will make your life a lot easier. Keep a good chihuahua reference book on hand so that you can look up on the spot what to do for certain circumstances throughout the dog's life.

Sleeping Habits & Comfort

When you pick up your puppy, whether it be from a breeder or a rescue, you may want to inquire of the past sleeping habits, to give yourself an idea of the training ahead of you.

If the puppy seems a bit nervous or lonely its first few nights, you can fill a water bottle with warm water and place it in the crate with the puppy. The puppy will likely think of the bottle as another puppy and snuggle asleep right next to it.

If you decide to use a crate, there are also two thoughts behind crate training. One would be that you make the space which the puppy has in the crate as small as possible, and leave nothing in the crate with them, so they learn to not eliminate in the crate. As you an imagine that is a quite scary experience for your new little friend and may also be very uncomfortable have to sleep on the plastic tray. The other thought is to have a crate and place a blanket in one half and a pee pad in the other half. This will encourage the puppy to continue to use the pee pads while enclosed, yet will give your chihuahua a soft place to rest their head during the night.

Pee Pad Training

Using pee pads is an excellent way to housetrain your chihuahua. They are very smart creatures and will catch on quickly. Each time you notice your chihuahua puppy sniffing around very rapidly, pick up the puppy and carry it to the pee pad. As the puppy learns to consistantly use the pee pad, slowly start moving it closer and closer to the door. Eventually you can move the pad outside and the puppy will let you know when they need to go out. This process takes a lot of patience and you can be guaranteed that there will be accidents.

It might be a good time to pick up the oriental rugs from the floor for a while until after house training is complete!

Be Patient!

They're just puppies, and they just don't know better. With some positive reinforcement, you're chihuahua will get the hang of it. Consider bringing them to obedience training to boost their self confidence and to keep you both a little happier (and well trained!)

Chihuahua Eating Habits & Food

Before leaving the breeder or rescue where you obtained your puppy, be sure to inquire of the brand (yes this matters!) of food that your dog was being fed. You will want to keep them on a consistent brand, and if you would like to change the brand slowly start mixing in the new brand of food with the old brand to ensure a smooth transition. If you change your chihuahua's food suddenly it is possible that they will get diarrhea for a short period while their bodies adjust to the new food. If it is gradually introduced the likelihood of this happening in much less.

There is also an extensive list of "people foods" which can be hazardous to dogs including chocolate, coffee, raisins, alcohol, onions, garlic, and grapes to name a few.

Chew Toys & Stimulation

Plenty of toys to chew on is also a HUGE must have. Yes, they may nibble on your couch, or coffee table, but if you give them enough toys to entertain themselves there will be less of a chance of them chewing on your possessions.

With chihuahuas you want to be careful on what types of things you give them to chew on. For example, Greenies makes a miniture version of its chewing bones which is a perfect size for a chihuahua. Rawhide bones on the other hand, no matter how small, can still be dangerous to these little guys when they start to unravel. If you would like to give your chihuahua raw hide try the large chips, and through them away once the piece gets too small.

Small sqeaky toys are also a great sense of entertainment for your puppy. They can play for hours and hours with these! A more simple toy is a rope with a knot tied on it, or even a sock. This is an easy quick toy if you are in need of a quick fix.

Chihuahua Accessories

As for accessories, sure people like to dress their dogs up because they think they look cute. But even if you are not a fan of dressing your dog you may want to consider a few items which will benefit your dog.

If you have a short coat chihuahua, you should keep in mind that they get cold very quickly-they are after all from Mexico! If you live in a state that has colder winter months you should think about investing in a jacket or sweater to make your dog more comfortable when going outside for a walk.

The second item which would highly be recommended would be a set of boots/shoes. Now they don't have to be anything fancy but they do serve a purpose. In the winter they will help protect your chihuahua's feet from the cold winter snow and also from the salt which dries out their paws. In the summer, the boots will help protect the delicate pads on the bottom of your pup's feet from the scorching pavement. We have all stepped on hot cement at one point or another, perhaps when coming out of the pool, and realized how painful it can be. Your pup feels the same way, and a pair of boots at a minimal cost will be greatly appreciated from your 4-legged friend.
