Chihuahuas In Television, Movies & Books
When you look at the popularity of the breed, I was actually amazed upon research how few Chihuahua Dogs are portrayed in popular entertainment media. With a large population of Chihuahua lovers here in the United States, I figured that there would be more.
There are, however, the two most famous Chihuahuas in the entertainment world. Those would be:
The Taco Bell Chihuahua: Who can forget those funny commercials like Yo Quiero Taco Bell and such?
Chloe, The Beverly Hills Chihuahua: On the big screen, Walt Disney Pictures was the only film company to ever showcase the Chihuahua as the star despite tons of movies being made with dog storylines and dog stars as part of the cast.
It was actually a bit of a hunt to find other Chihuahua Dogs of note in the entertainment world. Sure, there is a cartoon version of a rather psycho depiction of a Chihuahua from television, some Chihuahuas that have appeared in minor parts as pets on the big screen and very few fictional books feature a Chihuahua. The only children's book series that features Chihuahuas is where they are imaginary friends to a cat that actually looks somewhat like a Chihuahua himself.
Perhaps television, film producers and the literary world could change that?
Let's take a look at Chihuahuas In The Entertainment World for all the Chihuahua fans.

So let's have fun with Chihuahuas!
Tops In Television: The Taco Bell Chihuahua
The Taco Bell Chihuahua is probably the only major influence that Chihuahuas had with respect to television media. This popular Chihuahua is probably was the only living Chihuahua to achieve fame on the television screen. The Taco Bell Chihuahua commercials ran from 1997-2000. These hugely popular commercials coined such phrases as "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" but also "Viva Gorditas", "Drop The Chalupa", "Here Lizzard Lizzard" and "Uh-oh, I Think I'm Going To Need A Bigger Box".
The Taco Bell Chihuaua was so popular in fact that it was released in plush form, talking toys, t-shirts and wearables and more.
The Taco Bell Chihuahua was portrayed by Gidget Chipperton, a trained Chihuahua. There were also two stand-ins used in the commercials named Dinky and Taco. Sadly, Gidget was put to sleep in 2009 but will live on in our memories as the Taco Bell Chihuahua.

Controversial Television Cartoon: The Ren and Stimpy Show
Ren Was A Rather Psycho Crazy Cartoon Chihuahua

The Ren and Stimpy Show ran on Nickelodeon for five years (1991-96). Ren Hoek was an animated cartoon often described as a psychotic "asthma hound" of a Chihuahua. The storyline was the adventures Ren had with his Manx cat friend Stimpson J. Cat, nicknamed Stimpy.
The series ran for five years and I know it had a following. I myself only ever watched it a few times and found it a bit over the top for a cartoon. I know that many love adult humor cartoons though and Ren and Stimpy had it's fans too! My first reaction was one of surprise that it was airing on Nickelodeon, which is predominantly a children's cartoon channel.
The Ren and Stimpy show had a lot of controversy surrounding it. The characters often were involved in violent things (like beating up another character). It also had a lot of R-rated humor with sexual content and sometimes language you wouldn't want your child watching.
While Ren and Stimpy fans might not like my opinion, that's okay. I know that there are lots of followers for adult humor cartoons. Ren and Stimpy and their counterparts like South Park, Beavis & Butthead and more are ones I'd put along the same line of series. They are a cartoon, but definitely not for unsupervised viewing by children.
Ren and Stimpy still airs in syndicated reruns in some places.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua
The Chihuahua Hits The Big Screen In This Disney Movie

Walt Disney Pictures debuted Beverly Hills Chihuahua in October 2008 calling it "The Greatest Chihuahua Movie Of All Time". It certainly was cute but you be the judge.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua follows the adventures of Chloe, a posh, spoiled, pampered Beverly Hills pooch. Instead of it being a rags to riches story like most movies, Chloe goes from riches to rags when she becomes lost in Mexico. During her adventure she befriends a retired police dog, a German Shepherd named Delgado and is on the run. She even returns to her roots visiting Chihuahua, Mexico. Chloe gains a true friend in Delgado.
The movie has two parallel romantic storylines going, one in human form and one in canine form.
Chloe, the Chihuahua became lost in Mexico because her owner Vivian (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) leaves her in the care of her irresponsible niece who loses her there. The niece, Rachel, is somewhat spoiled herself not unlike Chloe.
Vivian's gardener, Sam and his loyal companion dog, a Chihuahua named Papi, set out to find Chloe in Mexico and assist Rachel in finding her.
In the end, there is a happy ending for all and lessons learned.
The movie included the voice talents of Drew Barrymore, Andy Garcia, George Lopez, Edward James Olmos, Placido Domingo and Cheech Marin.
It's an enjoyable movie for a family movie night.

Big Screen Movies With Chihuahuas In Them
Here are some of the other movies on the big screen that had Chihuahuas in them. None were near as big as a full length movie like Beverly Hills Chihuahua, but the dogs were present nonetheless:
Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2
Mars Attacks
Fools Rush In
Once Upon A Time In Mexico
As you can see there aren't many which I find surprising with the popularity of the Chihuahua dog and how many movies have pets in them and are stories about dogs. Go figure!

Skippyjon Jones Children's Books
A Cat That Looks Like A Chihuahua With Imaginary Chihuhua Friends
Chihuahuas in literature for adult reading mostly exist in nonfiction books about the breed, pet care etc.
There are a few other children's books about Chihuahuas which will be showcased in a bit.
When looking for the Chihuahua in children's literary works, the most reference to the breed is actually in a series of books written by author Judith Byron Schachner. It was an E.B. White Read Aloud Winner in 2004. Books in the series have won several other notable awards as well.
The key character, Skippyjon Jones is in actuality a small Siamese kitten with very large, unproportional ears that make him look like a Chihuahua. Skippyjon has imaginary friends, the Los Chimichangos, which is a group of Chihuahuas.
This children's book series follows the adventures of Skippyjon Jones, the cat that looks like a Chihuahua and his imaginary Chihuahua friends.
These are some great children's books and make for fun reading time! Plus, you show the Chihuahuas some love, even if they are imaginary. Have fun!

- My feelings for chihuahuas vary from each chihuahua... but the fact that they're so tiny is really amusing to me for some reason. Great lens. :)
