Several methods of treatment exists for ADHD

ADHD Treatment is not just about giving a pill to your child; it goes beyond that. The ideal treatment for ADD/ADHD is a combination of medication, and alternative treatments.

Alternative treatment addresses behavioral problems seen in children with ADHD. It would include things such as parenting support, academic strategies, and behavioral therapy.

Alternative ADHD treatments are gaining more popularity because they don't have the side effects that prescription medications for ADHD have.

This page is for educational and informational purposes. All information contained here is based on my experience as a parent and advocate of, and for, special needs children. It is designed to help support, not replace, the relationship that exists between the child and the professionals involved in their life.

Medication Therapy

ADHD medication is considered one of the most prescribed and the most used medications on the market. Generally, ADHD medication will reduce about 40% of the symptoms and are considered effective.

According to ADHD Guidelines from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, first line medications that can be used to treat children with ADHD include stimulants, like Ritalin and Adderall, and the non-stimulant medication Strattera.

Medication is not the only answer when it comes to treating ADHD. However; when taken in the right dosage, these medications can be effective for controlling symptoms.

Alternative Treatments

There are many alternative treatments available that focus specifically on child ADHD treatment. Every child is unique, so trust your instincts. As always, consult a doctor if you have questions, but you may find that alternative treatments provide your child with a safe and natural path.

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral Therapy, also known as behavior management, is shown to have positive results on ADHD children.

The goal of behavior therapy in ADHD children is to increase the desired behaviors. Typically, this is achieved through using positive reinforcements when the child acts appropriately, and using negative consequences when they don't.

Part of the success of behavior therapy lies in the active interest and support of the child's parents. As a result, the first step of therapy should be to improve the relationship that exists between the child and parents.

An important factor in using behavioral therapy is to identify the problem early and start treatment as soon as possible. Even very young ADHD children will benefit from some form of behavioral therapy.

Neurofeedback (aka Biofeedback)

Neurofeedback is a type of brainwave therapy that is thought to have the effect of resetting brain patterns that have developed.

Neurofeedback is attractive to many people and is used to address many other conditions, in addition to ADD and ADHD, because of the fact that it is non invasive.

Even though it has been used in many situations for more than forty years, there are still many who consider this approach to alternative therapy to be experimental.

Neurofeedback can be rather expense and out of reach for many people. On top of that, since it is considered by most insurance companies to be an experimental treatment, it is usually not covered.

I have had about 4 years (much of it prior to ADD diagnosis) of conventional therapy which I have also found extremely useful. Remember that at my age, I grew up without ADD in the child-rearing lexicon and you pick up an awful lot of baggage that way.

    In addition:
Have a look at video about how allergic reactions can mimick symptoms of ADD, ADHD and aggression.
It is also scientifically proven that sweeteners and food colourings can provoke ADD and ADHD like behaviour, so leave them out of the diet. 80% of diagnosed kids on Ritalin can go drugfree after one week of elimination diet of these substances!
