Every Child is an Artist
~Pablo Picasso
This lens is dedicated to a child artist who is adorable, smart, intelligent, emotional and very understanding. He is artistically gifted and I love to see his artistic skills and general intellectual ability. I am sometimes amazed at his creative thinking and the way he tries to explain his point with logical reasoning.
I wonder if this is how all the children are? Or these are the characteristics of a child artist - an artistically gifted child.
I have included the characteristics of this young boy who is very happy to be a big brother now. Meet my son - a child artist!!
P.S - This lens showcases the work of this child artist, all of which were done before his 5th birthday.Except the Ben 10 Decoupage Project which he did after getting the inspiration from my decoupage work.
Gifted Children

Family Portrait by a 4 year old!
General Characteristics of Gifted Children
Here are a few academic aptitude and abilities of gifted children.
A gifted child is able to extend learning from these key areas to various situations somewhat unrelated in orientation. They seek assistance of others beyond his or age peers in extending knowledge in areas of interest.
“I want to become an Artist!”
Visually/Artistically Gifted Children
My son - a child artist, a great artist in the making!

My son has shown the characteristics of an artistically gifted child.
The characteristics of artistically gifted children which are present in my son are:
~ He is fond of drawing a variety of objects. We all were surprised to see the family portrait he drew when he was just a 4 year old. Very artistically he has illustrated his family in the portrait.
~ He puts depth into drawing, showing planning and good proportion. He draw on a variety of subjects, sometimes they are just game drawings and how a superhero will fight with the demons. If he is drawing his dream house, he will elaborate on the structure and the pipe fittings required as well :)
~ He enjoys art and he will never be sitting idle. He can just take out his drawing sheet and colors and be lost in his drawing.
~ My son shows originality in modes of undertaking art. Most of the time when he draws something, he loves to explain the illustration and why he was using a certain shape and color.
~ Is willing to try out new materials and experiences. He is a keen observer. When he saw me doing decoupage, he wanted to decoupage his BEN10 art work.
~. Pursues art in spare time. He loves watching the art and craft shows and also reading the art and drawing related books.
~ He uses art to express feelings and experiences. He draws lovely cards on mother;s day and on our birthdays and sometimes just to say what he wants, he will take express it through his drawings.
~ He is interested in other people's art, both appreciating it and criticising it. If I do a craft work or just selecting colors for my web templates, he will come and give his ideas and suggestions.
This lens is a showcase of some of his art work which he did when he was just 3-5 years old. Art work which I have preserved to show to his kids one day:)
Reading is FUN!
Gifted Children are avid readers!
Our favorite place is the bookstore. He loves to browse the books available in the store. Once we get the books home, he will keep on reading till the book is finished. And most of the time within 2 hours he finishes the books and sometimes if the drive back home takes longer time, then he finishes reading the book in the car and he will declare .."the book is over." Many a times I wonder if he has read the book or not, but then he will start telling all the stories.Once I got him a big book "Ramayana". It is a mythological story very famous in India. It was quite big and I was happy that he will read it at least for a week. And the very next day he said, the Ramayana book is over. I could not believe and I asked him a few tricky questions which one could not answer without reading each and every word in the book.He could answer all of them. So finally I stopped worrying about and I realized that he had a good reading speed.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Diary of a Wimpy Kid books
Diary of a Child Artist
The good thing about Wimpy the Kid series of books is that there is so much scope for the kid to think visually. This is the Diary cover which he created. You can see the "Diary of an Artist" written on the cover and in the cartoon, there is an artist who is busy drawing. So this was a self portrait of the Child Artist!
Intellectual Ability
Gifted children have very good intellectual ability. They are very fond of asking questions.
Artistically gifted Children are curious
Displays a great curiosity about objects, situations or events.

My son is always curious about so many things and he keeps asking me questions. Sometimes, I don't know what to answer and in such situations also, my artist child will give me solution. He will say "Mamma, why don't you check out in Google?". So he knows that Google has an answer to all our questions.
I got a gift voucher from Good Housekeeping magazine, thanks to his questions about "How babies are born?" - a very popular question from kids.
Take the Poll.
Originality in Expression
Gifted Children reveals originality in oral and written expression.
“My son can calculate your age from your photos!”
Calculate age from Photos
Such an original idea of calculating age!!
For his Value Education class, he was given a simple assignment, he was supposed to write 5 sentences about a picture given in the book. He finished it in a few minutes. When I read the sentences, I got curious. I saw that he had mentioned the age of the two boys shown in the figure. Read the sentences written by my son in the above the figure.
I asked him, how did he know the age of the two boys in the picture. He said.." it is so easy mamma. see how i calculated. i took my scale, and put it over the picture and see.. this boy reaches till 5 in my scale and the other one reaches till 7. you don't know anything mamma".
Commonsense
Gifted children uses a lot of commonsense.
Early Evidence
Gifted Children show early evidence of their liking.

Children who are gifted in art usually begin young. I could see that my son was very fond of coloring and drawing and most of the time he would be busy drawing something. He loved to look at colored books full of colored images. I have been buying coloring books all the time. Whenever I travel with him, I make sure that I carry 4-5 coloring books and his crayon box so that he can occupied at the airports.
A child artist at work!
An Artist Child show creativity in other forms of art
Loves making Shapes with Clay

He loves to make shapes with clay and instead of just making shapes, he would try to mix up clay of various colors and see the outcome. And he will keep on mixing and at the end.. he will say.."Mamma, let's buy more play dough as the one i am having has lost all it's color. "

- My granddaughter got lost one day and we couldn't find her. When we did find her, she was looking at the newspapers my MIL had in a box. She always carried around books and cookbooks. As soon as she could read, she would count how many Garcias, etc. were in the phone book. This child can't get enough books and is now starting to write her own stories. Her teacher had one of her stories with illustrations published. I need to find that book and write a lens on it.

- Brilliant Lens! Remember that a lot of art these days is done on computers. I just started learning Photoshop and Illustrator in earnest about eight months ago but I wish I had learned so much earlier. When they're old enough make sure they get on the computer with their artistic abilities. There are free tools like GIMP you should check out if you can't get Photoshop and Illustrator.

Along the way, stories from gifted children and their parents provide insight into the lives of these individuals.
Is homeschooling better for gifted children?
Please share your ideas and views.

I think it is as a gifted child gets bored in a regular school and causes problems that label them as a problem child instead of a gifted child. If you homeschool, the child can learn at his/her own speed. It can also be focused on the child's interests.

My two younger boys are attending the Academy / Elementary Public school, and I'm really pleased with their Art and Rhythm and movements teachers...Besides that, the school stuff really encourage kids to use their creativity almost in every class. If my kids weren't accepted in this school, I would, probably, consider a homeschooling too.
BarbRad wrote...
I think homeschooling is definitely the way to go with a gifted child. Schools very often stifle creativity and the school day and the amount of homework assigned often leaves little time for the child's own interests to be pursued. When the parent makes the assignments, the child's interests can be taken into account and integrated with other subject matter.
