WE ARE SOOO EXCITED ABOUT THE BOOK THAT MATTHEW HAS WRITTEN. MATTHEW HAS BEEN ON OUR PRAYER LIST FOR A WHILE. HE'S AN AMAZING YOUNG MAN!!!

What happens when an inspiring boy uses the four powerful values of Hope, Faith, Courage and Love to overcome adversity? First-time young author Matthew Epp is all too familiar with this. Since the age of 2, the boy from Fiske, Saskatchewan has successfully combated a rare form of cancer. But now, the 14-year-old is fighting the cancer relapse of his life. His book Hope and the Dragon is finally providing young cancer patients with something they've never had: a powerful story written by one of their peers, offering the strength to beat the illness. The story tells how a boy undergoing surgery to remove a tumour dreams of a magical land. While a dragon becomes the metaphor for the cancer, the boy receives four special powers to slay the demon. Beautifully illustrated by Maris Chisholm, Hope and the Dragon explores a personal life story - from surviving a major illness to embracing the support of loved ones. "I have Hope, Faith and Courage on my side and Love standing guard at my back. No Dragon in the world is a match for all that," says the boy in the book, based on Epp's own courageous journey. Hope and the Dragon will certainly fill anyone with inspiration and tell them what it takes to survive a major challenge.

DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS:

DID YOU KNOW?
From Jacob's Site: http://www.caringbridge.org/fl/jacob/

In the U.S. almost 3000 children die from cancer
each year.

Cancer is the number one disease killer of
children.

In the past 20 years only one new cancer drug has
been approved for pediatric use.

Only 3 percent of the budget from the National
Cancer Institute goes towards Pediatric Cancer
Research.

September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness month,
which nationally goes largely unrecognized.

The government recently cut the budget for
Childhood Cancer Research.

14,000 children will be diagnosed this year with
cancer.

Currently there is between 30-40,000 children being
treated for cancer in the US.

As a nation, we spend $14 BILLION per year on the
space program, but only $35 MILLION on childhood
cancer research per year

CORD BLOOD DONOR FOUNDATION

www.cordblooddonor.org/

Cord Blood Donor Foundation CBDFLogoHome
CORD BLOOD DONOR FOUNDATION
What is Cord Blood?

"Cord Blood" is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta following birth. Cord blood stem cells have the ability to treat the same diseases as bone marrow with significantly less rejection. Cord blood is collected after the baby is born and the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut. It is painless and safe. When cord blood is collected and stored, the stem cells are immediately available for transplantation. Children make up a large portion of the 10,000 individuals each year who are unable to find a transplant in time.

Years of medical research have led to an amazing discovery: the blood in a baby's umbilical cord. First used in transplant in 1988, umbilical cord blood is a plentiful and rich source of stem cells -the building blocks of the immune system- that can be used to treat a variety of life-threatening diseases including leukemia, other cancers, and blood and immune disorders. In just the last few years, hundreds of acutely ill patients have received treatment because of this tremendous medical advance.

Approximately 25% of these transplants have come from siblings, with the rest coming from donated cord blood samples. As more and more families save their cord blood, whether through donation or private storage, these numbers should increase dramatically. According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, "10,000 to 15,000 Americans each year who need a (bone marrow) transplant are unable to find suitable donors". Cord blood is an alternative transplant resource. As of the year 2000, more than 2,000 cord blood transplants have been performed worldwide.

CBDF Mission Statement

The Cord Blood Donor Foundation (CBDF) is a Not-For-Profit, 501 (c)3 human health and welfare organization dedicated to providing educational and public awareness and promoting further research using umbilical cord blood stem cells from live birth for the treatment of disease.

FASTER CURE
Our Mission:

The Pediatric Cancer Foundation, exists to raise money to fund pediatric cancer research. Our focus is to fund research which will lead to the elimination of pediatric cancer worldwide.

Research.
It's what we fund.
It's all we do.
It's the only way to find a cure.

The Facts and Faces of Childhood Cancer:

*Cancer remains the number one disease that claims the lives of our children. Each year cancer kills more children under the age of 20 than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and AIDS combined.

*Each year in the U.S., approximately 12,500 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer. That's the equivalent of two average size classrooms diagnosed each school day.

*Today, nearly 80 percent of children diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors and the majority of them are considered cured. In the early 1950s, less than 10 percent of childhood cancer patients could be cured.

*Leukemias, tumors of the brain and nervous system, the lymphatic system, kidneys, bones and muscles are the most common childhood cancers.

*In the U.S., cancer remains responsible for more deaths from one year through adolescence than any other disease; more deaths than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and AIDS combined.

*Combined, the cancers of children, adolescents and young adults to age 20 are the sixth most common cancer in the U.S.

*Breakthroughs in pediatric oncology will undoubtedly continue to progress the diagnosis and treatment of adult cancers. Many of the principles in therapy used today in treating adults were first developed and tested for children.

Heroes For Children
HEROES FOR CHILDREN
Our History: Heroes for Children is a nonprofit organization providing financial and social assistance to families, within the state of Texas, with children (0-22 yrs of age) battling cancer. Formerly known as Taylor 's Angels, Heroes for Children was created in memory of Taylor Anne Brewton and Allison Leigh Scott. We strive to make a difference in the lives of families in Texas.

Mission Statement: Heroes for Children is a nonprofit organization providing financial and social assistance to families, within the state of Texas, with children (0-22 yrs of age) battling cancer.

Currently, an estimated 12,400 children, ages 0-20 years, are diagnosed with a form of cancer in the United States . With diagnosis comes the challenge to provide financially for the family. In order to provide constant care for their child, parents frequently lose or quit their jobs. The money Heroes for Children donates directly to families helps relieve some of the strain and stress during this difficult time in their lives. Whether it is to pay a medical bill, buy gas for the frequent trips to the hospital, or keep a family from having their electricity turned off, Heroes for Children is committed to helping families. There is no other organization that provides such versatility when it comes to financially assisting families. A social worker at a Texas children's hospital said, "The impact of the aid and the hope that you have instilled in these families cannot be measured." With your help, Heroes for Children can continue to assist these families and make a difference in our community.

A social worker at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Staci Rubin, wrote, "When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it seems that the family, even a financially stable family, has financially hard times. Having the added stresses associated with with financial burdens, is more than families should have to bear. It is so nice to have an organization that is available to help in these types of situations. No strings attached!" As one parent explained, "it is hard to ask for help, but when you receive it, there is such a burden lifted off your shoulders. You are then allowed to focus on more important things." Heroes for Children enables a family to focus on the most important part of treatment--the child.

Heroes for Children is proud to announce that $188,000 was donated to families in Texas battling childhood cancer in 2006! No request was denied. Over 265 requests were fulfilled to help assist families with their financial burdens. With your help, Heroes for Children can give more in 2007! Please consider making a donation today!

HOPE STREET KIDS

HOPE STREET KIDS
HOPE STREET KIDS
Children's Cancer Centers and Standards

Children's Cancer Centers: Children's cancer centers are hospitals or units in hospitals that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in children and adolescents. Most children's cancer centers treat up to the age of 20.

Because childhood cancer is relatively rare, it is important to seek treatment from specialized cancer programs familiar with the appropriate treatment of children with cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, studies have shown that children's survival rates are 20 to 40 percent better if their cancer care is coordinated by pediatric oncologists and delivered at comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer centers that follow established protocols. Additionally, these centers participate in specially designed and monitored research studies, which will help develop more effective treatments and address issues of long-term childhood cancer survival. However, being treated at a specialized childhood cancer center does not necessarily mean that a parents and patients have to choose to receive treatment as part of a study or clinical trial. Participation in research studies are always voluntary.

Children's Cancer Center Standards: The National Cancer Institute as well as the following groups has established standards for children's cancer centers or programs:

-The Children's Oncology Group (COG) is a network of children's cancer centers, which meet strict quality assurance standards.

-The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published "Guidelines for the Pediatric Cancer Center and Role of Such Centers in Diagnosis and Treatment" in 1986 and 1997.

-The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPH/O) established standard requirements for programs treating children with cancer and blood disorders.

-The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association set institutional selection criteria, based on the COG standards, for its Blue Quality Center for Pediatric Cancer.

These four groups specify that a center of excellence in childhood cancer offer comprehensive professional care which would include the following: Trained pediatric oncologists (doctors who specialize in childhood cancer) as well as different specialists who work as a team; Pediatric surgeons and specialist surgeons such as a neurosurgeon and urologic surgeon; Radiation oncologists, Pathologists, nurses, consulting pediatric specialist, psychiatrists, oncology social workers, nutritionists, and home health care professionals.

To find a children's cancer center that meets these standards ask your family's pediatrician or family doctor often they can refer you. Families and health professionals also can call the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service (CIS) at 1-800-4-Cancer. CIS can provide you with names, addresses, and telephone numbers for children's cancer centers that belong to the Children's Oncology Group.bkcl1p

MEMORIAL SLOAN-KETTERING CANCER CENTER

http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/44.cfm

MEMORIAL SLOAN-KETTERING
MEMORIAL SLOAN-KETTERING CANCER CENTER
ABOUT US: As one of the world's premier cancer centers, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is committed to exceptional patient care, leading-edge research, and superb educational programs. The close collaboration between our physicians and scientists is one of our unique strengths, enabling us to provide patients with the best care available today as we work to discover more effective strategies to prevent, control, and ultimately cure cancer in the future. Our education programs train future physicians and scientists, and the knowledge and experience they gain at Memorial Sloan-Kettering has an impact on cancer treatment and the biomedical research agenda around the world. The melding of research with patient care is at the heart of everything we do. At Sloan-Kettering Institute, state-of-the-art science research flourishes side-by-side with clinical investigation and treatment at Memorial Hospital, the nation's oldest cancer hospital. We are also one of 39 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, affirming our leadership in research, patient care, and education.

PATIENT CARE: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center experts have established standards of care and treatment protocols for each type and stage of cancer. Our physicians have an extraordinary depth and breadth of experience in diagnosing and treating all forms of the disease, from the most common to the very rare. Each year, they treat more than 400 different subtypes of cancer. This level of specialization can have an often-dramatic effect on a patient's chances for a cure or control of their cancer. And while we are known for our advanced, innovative therapies, our physicians are equally well regarded for their compassion and concern. Our Disease Management Program features 16 multidisciplinary cancer teams. Patients are treated by as many different specialists as are needed for their particular type of disease, including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, psychiatrists, and nurses. Our pathologists have unsurpassed expertise in using advanced methods to accurately diagnose cancer. Memorial Sloan-Kettering's surgeons perform more cancer operations than at any other hospital in the nation, and because of their sole focus on cancer can often use surgical techniques that preserve form and function. And our radiation oncologists are developing and putting into clinical practice leading-edge technologies and techniques in radiation therapy. In addition, the Center offers a full range of programs to help patients and families throughout all phases of treatment, including support groups, genetic counseling, help managing cancer pain and symptoms, rehabilitation, integrative medicine services, and assistance in navigating life after treatment.

RESEARCH: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center maintains one of the world's most dynamic programs of cancer research. The extraordinary patient care we provide benefits from our innovative programs in basic, translational, and clinical research. Research at Sloan-Kettering Institute is dedicated to understanding the biology of cancer through programs in cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, computational biology, immunology, and therapeutics. Investigators at Sloan-Kettering Institute collaborate with Memorial Hospital physician-scientists, a partnership that helps speed important research findings from the laboratory to the bedside, in a process known as translational research. Memorial Sloan-Kettering also actively initiates and participates in clinical trials to identify more effective cancer therapies, and our physicians are currently leading more than 400 clinical trials for pediatric and adult cancers. Established in 2005, the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) is a further effort to increase institutional research strength in areas important in contemporary translational research. HOPP is designed to meld even more thoroughly the cultures of basic biologic science and clinical oncology, augmenting the work conducted in the laboratories of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's physician-scientists.

EDUCATION & TRAINING: Education is a vital part of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's mission. Our training programs prepare physicians and scientists for careers in the biomedical sciences. Our collaborations with The Rockefeller University, Cornell University, and Weill Medical College of Cornell University offer PhD programs in chemical biology, computational biology and medicine, and the medical sciences. The Center also partners with Weill Medical College and The Rockefeller University to offer a MD/PhD degree for aspiring physician-scientists. In 2004, the Center established a PhD program in cancer biology through its new Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. This novel program, which enrolled its first class in 2006, trains basic laboratory scientists to work in research areas directly relevant to cancer and other human diseases. We also offer postgraduate clinical fellowships to train physicians who seek special expertise in a particular type of cancer and postgraduate research fellowships that provide physicians and scientists with advanced laboratory research training. With faculty appointments at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, our clinical staff also train residents and medical students.

FACILITIES: Along with state-of-the-art facilities for diagnosis, inpatient, and ambulatory care in Manhattan, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has outpatient facilities located throughout the tri-state area. Memorial Hospital, with 437 beds, is located at 1275 York Avenue, between 67th and 68th Streets on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The majority of the Center's outpatients are seen at our Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion on 53rd Street at Third Avenue in midtown Manhattan. This facility offers medical consultation, diagnostic imaging, chemotherapy, pharmacy services, cancer screening, and integrative medicine services. Outpatient breast cancer services in Manhattan are provided at the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center on 64th Street near Second Avenue. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are offered on an outpatient basis at community-based cancer treatment centers in New Jersey, Long Island, and Westchester County. These regional programs are staffed by Memorial Sloan-Kettering physicians and other Center healthcare professionals. Memorial Sloan-Kettering is constantly renovating and expanding to meet the growing needs of our patients, physicians, and scientists. A new 23-story research building, The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Research Center, has opened across the street from Memorial Hospital. The new building, with more than 300,000 square feet of laboratory space, houses many of our cancer research programs. PEDIATRIC CANCER FOUNDATION

http://www.pcfweb.org/

PEDIATRIC CANCER FOUNDATION
The Pediatric Cancer Foundation, known as the Maxwell Leeds Pediatric Tumor Foundation until well after 1982, was founded in 1970 by grateful parents whose son underwent surgery at Babies Hospital, New York Presbyterian Medical Center. (This hospital is now known as Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian.) These grateful parents established the Foundation after realizing that malignant pediatric tumors were extremely prevalent and that children afflicted in this way needed treatment with the most advanced medical techniques. The Foundation started simply and utilized the services of devoted volunteers to perform every aspect of fund raising. The first group of Directors were the parents' family, neighbors and friends, but in a relatively short period of time the membership expanded rapidly to over 40 committed individuals who gave their expertise, time, and support to achieve outstanding goals in basic and clinical research as well as in the care and treatment of children with cancer.

The first event raised $5,000; however, from 1970-1982 approximately $500,000 was raised. Of the three fellowships grants awarded during that time, one was given to the now renowned pediatric surgeon, Dr. Charles Stolar.

Today PCF has grown to include support for children and their families afflicted with all types of cancer. Three decades of support has enabled the foundation to purchase state-of-the-art equipment, support research projects and bring exceptional fellows to both the surgical and oncology departments.

The many hours spent by our caring membership (which consists of over 200 volunteers) enables us to raise significant funds when hospital financial problems threaten to impede further progress.

This year we have committed approximately three quarters of a million dollars in programs, research and equipment. In an effort to meet these commitments, we stage annual events including our opening Luncheon, Gala Benefit, Journal, Walkathon and for the past several years, a summer Swimathon program. Starting with the year 2000, we held our first annual corporate baseball fundraiser, and as of 2001 we added a Bikeathon. Keeping pace with our growth, community efforts in creating our many satellite events have added additional resources and friends as well as dollars.

We hold the hands of children and their families with the hope that our efforts will help eradicate the number one non-accidental killer of children. We started as a grassroots, down-home organization that started by doing its own licking and stamping on the dining room tables of its members. Today we have grown into our own and now support five major hospitals in the tri-state area, including their satellite outreach programs. With the inclusion of advanced technological equipment that we support, our doctors are in communication with hospitals both nationally as well as on an international level. In this new millennium, we look forward to our continued efforts at growth and advancement in this field, to not only cure but to provide a normal life for children with cancer.

ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL
St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility anywhere. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

We are where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do more science, more quickly. Where doctors across the world send their toughest cases and most vulnerable patients. Where no one pays for treatment beyond what is covered by insurance, and those without insurance are never asked to pay. We've built America's 3rd-largest health-care charity, with a model that keeps the costs down and the funds flowing, so the science never stops.

All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay.

THE JIMMY FUND
The Jimmy Fund supports cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Jimmy Fund Clinic: The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a place where children and their families find hope.

For people in New England and around the globe, the Jimmy Fund Clinic is one of the world's premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment. Starting in the 1940s, when Institute founder Sidney Farber, M.D. used drug therapy to achieve the first-ever remissions of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Dana-Farber researchers have made strides against virtually every type of cancer that strikes children, from solid tumors that involve individual organs to those that affect blood or lymph.

The clinic is also a place where vintage Disney paintings adorn the walls, the waiting rooms are playrooms, and caring doctors and nurses provide expert and compassionate care for children with cancer.

Designed specifically for the comfort and convenience of pediatric cancer patients and their families, the Jimmy Fund Clinic follows Farber's "total patient care" philosophy, assuring that a patient's psychological, family and spiritual needs, as well as their medical needs, are met.

Through a unique and long-standing collaboration, Jimmy Fund Clinic patients receive inpatient care when needed at nearby Children's Hospital Boston, the nation's premier pediatric medical center.

Thursday's Children: For children undergoing outpatient treatment for cancer, and for their families, the playroom at the Jimmy Fund Clinic is the center of the world. During their months or years of therapy, children come to the clinic each week on the same day. This YANKEE Magazine article features a day in the life of the Jimmy Fund Clinic:

THE PRAYER BEARS

The Prayer Bears
THE PRAYER BEARS
Romans 15:1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Hello! Our mission as a Prayer Bear Group is very simple! Praying! We take prayer requests, sign guestbooks, offer encouraging words to the families, and most importantly pray for you, for the cubs, and the family. We would like to help stand in the gap for the families when they need prayer. Sometimes the only encouragement a family gets is through the guestbook entries. Just knowing that someone was there to check on the well being of their child means so much and reading a message can make a huge difference in the rest of the day! We want to lift these families up, give them hope of better days ahead, and show the love of Jesus. Praying for the desire to be put in the hearts of our Prayer Bears to spread cheer, love, and have compassion for all man-kind.

God Bless You!

THE SIDNEY KIMMEL COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER AT JOHN HOPKINS

http://www.hopkinskimmelcancercenter.org/

SIDNEY KIMMEL CANCER CENTER
THE SIDNEY KIMMEL COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER AT JOHN HOPKINS
Overview: Since its inception in 1973, the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins has been dedicated to better understanding human cancers and finding more effective treatments. One of only 39 cancer centers in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Kimmel Cancer Center has active programs in clinical research, laboratory research, education, community outreach, and prevention and control. The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center is the only such NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state of Maryland. More on the NCI's Cancer Centers Program including a locator map.

Patients who visit the Kimmel Cancer Center have access to some of the most innovative and advanced therapies in the world. Because Center clinicians and research scientists work closely together, new drugs and treatments developed in the laboratory are quickly transferred to the clinical setting, offering patients improved therapeutic options.

The Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins encompasses a wide spectrum of specialty programs for both adults and children coping with cancer, including bone marrow transplantation and new drug development. Additionally, those at high-risk for breast, ovarian, colon and other cancers, may seek information about early detection, prevention and genetic counseling through a comprehensive genetics service.

The Center also offers complete family and patient services that include a Cancer Counseling Center, survivors and palliative care programs, and two residences for patients traveling from out-of-town to receive treatment.

Hopkins furthered its commitment to excellence in patient care and research by building two new facilities that enhance ongoing programs and services and promote new developments in cancer research, treatment and prevention: the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Building, a new clinical care cancer facility, opened in the fall of 2000, and the Bunting Blaustein Building, a state-of-the-art cancer research and teaching building, opened in late 1999.

WHY IS JOHN316 MY USER NAME?

JOHN 3:16
  • "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life."

WOW - this verse says it all! God was willing to give His only Son to die on the cross for our sins, so that each of us would have the opportunity to accept Jesus into our hearts & accept the free gift of salvation. We just have to ask Him! If we ask Him & believe with all our hearts - He promises us a home with Him in heaven when we die. It's so easy that even a child can accept this gift. If you're reading this & accept Jesus into your heart - please sign my guestbook & let me know!

    God Bless You!
    Much Love - Stacey
