Childhood Obesity. Where to Start the Battle With Childhood Obesity.
Looking for answers. Do you know when to be concerned about your child's weight? Of course, all children gain weight as they grow older. But extra pounds - more than what's needed to support their growth and development - can lead to childhood obesity.
Childhood obesity can be troubling because the extra pounds start kids on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Obesity occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height.
The best strategy to combat excess weight in your child is to improve the diet and exercise levels of your entire family. This helps protect the health of your child now and in the future.
Problems that could be in your childs future include:
· Heart disease
· Diabetes
· High cholesterol
· High blood pressure
· Metabolic syndrome
So the question where to start the battle with childhood obesity needs to be answered. To know this you need to know the contributing factors to obesity.
· Diet. Loading up on soft drinks, candy and desserts may cause weight gain over time. Eating fast foods, baked goods and vending machine snacks, contribute to weight gain and develop habits that are very hard to break. Foods and beverages like these are high in sugar and calories.
· Inactivity. Leisure activities, such as watching television or playing video games, contribute to the problem. Kids are more likely to gain weight because they don't burn calories through physical activity. Our school system no longer requires kids to attend physical education classes. In my opinion this a major contributing factor to our obesity problem in America today.
· Genetics. If a child comes from a family where one parent is overweight and the other is normal then he or she may be genetically predisposed to put on excess weight. But if several or everyone is overweight the problem could be an environment where high-calorie food is always available and physical activity isn't encouraged.
· Psychological factors. Children that have to cope with family problems or have to deal with emotions like stress and boredom will often overeat. It's an escape that is comfortable for them.
Parents are responsible for putting healthy foods in the kitchen at home and leaving unhealthy foods in the store. You can't blame your kids for being attracted to sweet, salty and fatty foods; after all they taste good. But you can control much of their access to these foods, especially at home.
It is extremely hard for anyone to lose weight without help and that includes children. If you're seriously concerned about childhood obesity and ready to start the battle go to The Battle Starts Here!
