All About Children's Pageants

Children's pageants are fun, controversial, exciting, and an important part of many children's (both boys and girls) upbringing. This lens will teach you What is the Difference Between a Natural Pageant and a Glitz Pageant How Much do Parents pay for Pageants. and much more.

My own child was involved in pageants as a child. I allowed her to do pageants when she requested it. I also allowed her to stop when she requested to stop. That is probably the most important thing about children's pageants. When it ceased to be fun, the child should be in control of how much they participate. The activity should not be parent driven.

Kids pageants as a learning experience

Like it or not, children's pageants are here to stay. My child participated from age 9 till 12 and at that point decided to stop. As she espressed it "it is not worth the hard work and preparation if a real prize (College scholarship) is not involved. I will think about it again when I get closer to college". Meanwhile, she transitioned very nicely to theater.

I don't think she would do as well as she does on the stage today if it weren't for the preparation provided at pageants. She learned that practice really does make perfect, and also gained the poise that she needs for the stage today.

With or Without the Interview?

Some children's pageants have interviews. Some do not. My preference is for pageants with interviews as it includes the personality and abilities of the child to outshine her outward appearance.

For pageants that do have interviews, it is important to practice to build those interview skills.

Positivity in Pageantry

There are many postive reasons that pageants are still popular today.
  • Pageants help with public speaking: For pageants where children are interviewed and speak on stage, this is a valuable opportunty to learn how to speak to a crowd.
  • Pageants can be a bonding experience for parent and child. Mothers and daughters especially tend to have a "hobby" that is just for them to enjoy together.
  • Children learn the value of hard work. In most cases, it is the child who is most prepared that wins.
  • Young girls get to enjoy a bit of fantasy dress up. As my daughter said at her first pageant, "I can't believe I actually get to do this!".
  • Pageants prepare you for visible careers, such as newscasters, talk show hosts (oprah), and entertainers. For talented girls and girls interested in media, pageants are a great first step.

Aren't Children's Pageants Expensive?

Between the sponsor fees, the gowns, the accessories, suits, other outfits and training. Pageants can cost a great deal of money.

Part of the experience of being in a pageant however, is fund raising. Children appreciate the experience more and get more out of it, if they have participated in making the money to fund their activity. It is a way to let people support her and get the community, family, and friends behind her. After all, they are called sponsor fees for a reason. You should get a business to pay the sponsor fees in exchange for advertisements, and raise the rest of the money through fund-raising.

Natural or Glitz

In natural pageants girls in the princess and pre-teen categories are not allowed to wear makeup, wigs, or anything to alter their appearance. Sunday type and party dresses are recommended

In Glitz pageants, girls of all ages can dress up with makeup, wear flappers (fake teeth) and wear heavily beaded dresses.

Most pageants fall somewhere in the middle of these two styles.

When preparing for a pageant, you should contact the director to get clear instructions on what is expected and not allowed.

I worked on the Miss California Pageant for 5 years, basically living with the contestants at a hotel for a week. Each of us "big sisters" was assigned to several girls, chaperoning them around town, etc. Other than behind-the-scenes dramas and cheating by some of the judges, it was a positive experience. As long as things don't get too out of control, I think it's a good self-esteem builder, even for very young contestants.
