Feng Shui Basics for Children
The main goal in transforming any children's space, is to create a healthy, creative, safe environment that helps your child grow and develop in a positive way, while enhancing harmony and reducing stress.
Creating a Feng Shui Classrom
Stimulate A Learning Enivironment
Classroom Clutter: Creating a clutter-free classroom sets up an environment conducive to balanced concentration. If children are encouraged to maintain this organized space, they will feel connected to the process. A safe, clean, well-laid out classroom provides the background elements necessary to spark creativity.Desk Placement:
- The teacher's desk should be in the power position, facing the door with it's back firmly against the wall.
- Children's desks should also sit facing the doorway of the room; a desk facing a wall represents an obstacle and when a child's back is to the door, positive energy has a harder time reaching them.
Motivation, Success, Positive Flow :
- Every child needs to have recognition for a job well done. Create an "achievement area" with awards, ribbons, pictures or trophies displayed in the southern "recognition" area.
- Shells and fish are symbols of educational success. Place a conch shell or a picture of koi, or goldfish, in the northeast corner; representing wisdom and learning.
- Create a "yin" (motivating) energy in a room with an aquarium, fountain, live plants, and natural light sources.
- Another good way to activate positive chi in a study environment is to place a crystal sphere in the main window of the room.
- Water symbolizes the flow of knowledge and serenity.
- The best color to enhance children's study is soft green; which represents knowledge.

Feng Shui Colors

Every color vibrates with its own unique frequency and alters the type of energy present. Yang colors are warmer, such as red, orange and yellow and have a denser energy. Yin colors, like blue, black, purple and white, are cooler, lighter, and vibrate at higher frequencies.
1. Yang colors according to Feng Shui tend to be fire and wood elements. Feng Shui believes that these are the colors that provide enthusiasm, or the positive energy required to do something or be motivated.
Red: Red is a primary color, a grounding color and relates to physical energy. Red energy relates to determination, courage and will. It gives the physical energy to achieve goals.
- Unbalanced: prolonged exposure to large amounts of red can cause an unhealthy focus on materialism, self-preservation and fear.
- Balanced: energy and love for life is increased.
Yellow: Yellow is considered to be as auspicious as red. Yellow represents sunbeams, warmth, motion, cheerfulness and friendliness.
- Unbalanced: prolonged exposure to large amounts of intense yellow can cause anxiety.
Orange: Filled with yang energy, orange strengthens concentration. Orange gives a sense of purpose and is the color of organization.
2. Yin colors, according to Feng Shui, are the colors that bring about healing and relaxation.
Blue: Blue is calm and soothing. This color reflects love as it heals and relaxes. Blue creates a feeling of peace and trust. Since it is the color of the sea and sky, Feng Shui associates it with adventure and exploration.
- Navy Blue: the color of intellect and wisdom, great for a classroom!
Black: Black symbolizes money and income, black is great for career focus, especially when combined with metal. Black is also the Feng Shui color of emotional protection and power.
Purple: Purple, lies at the end of the color spectrum, and has great significance. The color is excellent for physical and mental healing and Feng Shui associates it with spiritual awareness.
White: White represents poise, confidence and purity. Because of it's significant yin energy, Feng Shui uses this color mostly in combination with gold or silver to generate calm feelings.

Colors are key to the Chinese art of feng shui ("Fung Shway"), a system of placement whose simplicity and ecological good sense have struck such a chord recently in the West. Now Lin Yun and Sarah Rossbach, well known for their introduction to the West of feng shui, have written a fully illustrated guide to color application in all areas of life: home, garden, clothes, food, environment, health, and fortune-telling.
Feng Shui Bedrooms for Children
Bed Placement: The head of the bed should be placed on a solid wall. There shouldn't be a doorway or window on the same wall; this is to stop positive chi (energy) from flowing out. Place the bed so that there is room to walk around it. Avoid placing the bed against a shared wall of a bathroom, or under a window.Clutter: Clutter is "eye noise" and disturbs overall harmony. Pay special attention to the space underneath the bed. If there is a lot of stuff under there, positive energy can become stuck.
Electronic Devices: Electromagnetic frequencies released from any electronics in a room disturb sleep patterns by decreasing the body's production of melatonin. They can also increase moodiness and aggression. To limit these effects, place computer monitors, alarm clocks, and lamps two to five feet away from your child's bed.
Decor: Family photos placed closed to any child's bed creates a sense of family, even when they are alone.
Study Area: A child's study area or desk should face the northeast; the direction of wisdom and learning.
