Many organizations and individual people are doing what they can to ease the hunger of flesh, spirit, and mind of the orphaned children in Sierra Leone. Read (Hear) the stories! Look (See) the children! Engage (Act) your heart to the sweet, sweet children of Sierra Leone.

Face-to-Face!
Just think about it for a second. If you were to give your child $25 and help them set-up a Kiva account they could pick an individual or family and watch their money help someone in a different country. When the loan is paid back, they could then re-loan it to someone else. Over a course of a lifetime, say until the age of 85, that could easily be $2,000 loaned from one $25 investment and potentially helping 80 people (if your child was 5 at the start).
It's like Christmas, Birthday's, New Year's, well...all holidays really...rolled into one!

FIRST STEP CHILDREN'S FUND

Pretty much everything begins with one step. First Step Children's Fund is the same way.
How did I learn about them? Well, it was through the son of one of the owners of Aries Aviation. There was a group of us discussing the book Blood Diamonds when Don mentioned Håkon's orphanage in Sierra Leone. Afterwards I asked him for their website. The Hasting's Children Center started in 2004 and looks after street children.
Knowing both owners of Aries for 15+ years and having worked with Håkon's wife, Calida since 1997 off and on before I finally met her in 2005, I was comfortable in supporting this orphanage. I met Håkon at a Christmas party in 2006. They are good people. Working in the industry that they do they see much of the world. 100% goes straight to the orphanage. FSCF succeeded in obtaining approval from Revenue Canada as a charitable organization in May 2006.
For ways to help Click Here.
UPDATE: I'm still very much a fan and sponsor of this organization. The cold snap in Calgary prevented me from attending a cookie exchange (bummer!) at Calida's house, but I did get to see her the week before at the Aries 2008 Christmas party. It will never cease to amaze me how just one person makes a difference and how relatively inexpensive it is to help. In many ways, it's actually stunning!
Should you have a dime to spare in these rather turbulent economic times, kindly check out First Step Children's Fund.
Thank you.

- Children of the Nations: Sierra Leone

- Orphans In Africa Project
"Orphans in Africa Project is a non-profit Christian charity organisation created for the purpose of assisting AIDS orphans and street kids. It is funded totally by donations of caring individuals and churches. It is not affiliated to any particular church or organisation but is supported by many."
- Kids Home International- Childrens Aid Organizations-Orphanages in Africa
"Kids Home International will strive to establish a safe and secure place for children with no families to call home, which would enable them to receive tender care and loving support during their stay there. Every child deserves a chance- a chance to live, a chance to love and be loved, a chance to learn, and a chance to grow into a happy and productive adult."
- Orphanages in Africa
"Children's Hunger Relief seeks to rescue these desperately vulnerable children. We currently support children's homes in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda - where some 25% of all AIDS orphans on the continent live. By the end of the year we will be supporting homes in Zambia as well, where another 5% of AIDS orphans live.
We also support two homes in Sudan, where hundreds of thousands of children have been orphaned by the region's brutal civil war."

FIFA WORLD CUP & CHILDREN

Perhaps you've seen the ads on TV? Or maybe they're just here in Canada? FIFA has done some wonderful things with it's association with SOS during it's "Lets Play, Let's Build" campaign.
Soccer is a great way to unite people as it's such a popular and accessible sport worldwide.
This particular campaign is helping children in Southern Africa. Still a worthy cause.

Thinking of adoption? Possibly fostering a child? Perhaps this perspective from an adult who lived through fostering may give you some direction on what to expect or consider in that particular journey. It's jarring and beautifully written.
