Grandparents!
I was originally going to make a lens about books that are great for kids and grandparents to read together. As I started to read books, I realized there are some great ones out there, but also several of them were of a different nature. They help explain to little kids that sometimes grammas and grampas get sick and seem different to us. I've included some of both types of books here for you.
Grandma Books
These are some very fun books about grandmas! When I was little, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents' house. These are some books that would be fun to share with any child!
"That's What Grandmas Are For" is an awesome book that explains all sorts of fun things to do with grandmas. The second half of the book tells what grandkids are for. I loved it! Harriet Ziefert is one of my new favorite authors. She also writes one called "Grandma, It's for You!" Lulu is a little girl who makes a beautiful birthday gift for her grandma.
As always, Mercer Mayer brings us a great story about our favorite Little Critter. He and his grandmother spend a wonderful day at the beach having lots of fun.

Grandma in English and Spanish
Remembering Grandma/ Recordando a Abuela
This is a very unique grandma book because it is written in both English and Spanish. A little girl's grandmother dies, and the whole family is having a hard time dealing with the loss. At her grandpa's house, they are clearing out her grandma's things a few months later, and she and her grandfather go on a walk down memory lane. In the end, her grandma's loss isn't as hard as she thought.
More Gramma Books
Apparently there are a TON of books written about grammas! I'm sure there are more about grampas, I just haven't found them yet! Here are a few more I've read and loved.
"My Grandma is Coming to Town" sticks out to me because a little boy is looking forward to his grandma coming to visit from far away. They talk on the phone, but it has been a long time since he's seen her. When she finally arrives, he is quite shy. Isn't this often the case with kids?

Grandpa Books
As usual, Todd Parr is on my reading list. Love him! And I love the book "40 Uses for a Grandpa." It really only has 40 words, but some of them are pretty clever! I really like "cash machine," "hand warmer," and "assistant."
"Grandpa Green" is a unique one. It tells a grandpa's story of growing up on a farm, meeting Grandma, going to war, coming home, and getting old. But it is told through his garden. The story and the pictures are awesome!

When Grandparents Get Sick...
Here are some books about when grandparents get sick with various common ailments. These are well-written and clearly and simply explain what's going on to little ones.
"Still My Grandma" is about a grandma who gets Alzheimer's disease. The girl, Camilla, finds ways to still spend time with her grandma and continue traditions they held together.
"Now One Foot, Now the Other" is a story of a grandfather who has a stroke. In the beginning of the book, Grampa teaches the child to walk, and at the end, the child helps Grampa relearn to walk.
"What's Happening to Grandpa?" is a well-written book about a granddaughter who realizes her grandpa can't remember as much. She finds out he has Alzheimer's and will continue to get worse. In an effort to help him and continue to love and build memories with him, she helps her grandpa build a scrapbook of his life.
"My Grandpa Had a Stroke" tells the story of a boy and his grandfather and the changes that take place after he has a stroke.
"Grandma's Gone to Live in the Stars" is a very simple story of a grandma who has died. I love the opening line: "I was so sick. So sick that I died. Now I feel wonderful." What a great reminder that though we want people to stay here with us, they feel better in heaven.

A Keepsake
Amy Krouse Rosenthal has a series of keepsake journals for all occasions. This is a special one for grandparents to keep track of fun things their grandkids say and do, as well as milestones in their lives. What a great way to remember everything!
Stories from the Old Days
These are some stories of grandparents telling about when they were growing up.
"Baby On the Way" is about a woman who was the 10th child, born to slaves. She tells all about the traditions handed down and employed on the day she was born. Very cool.

- Great list of books! I still have a number of years before I become a grandmother, but I'm looking forward to reading lots of great books with my grandchildren when that day finally comes. Right now one of my favorite daily activities is letting each of my children select a book to read and then sitting down and reading to them all. It's probably the only quiet 45 minutes in the house we have each day. Liked.

- I think these are great ideas for books. It's important for children to realize that grandparents are not going to be around forever, and my eldest daughter gets emotional thinking about things like this. It's a difficult subject, but one which in the right situation needs to be mentioned to them. Nicely done.

- Liked your lens being a grandparent myself. I have a six-year-old grand-daughter just now beginning to read and doing quite well.
Thanks for visiting and liking my lens One for the Birds.
