Pretend play is well known for improving a child's creativity and teaches invaluable lessons like responsibility, organization, and sharing.

Pretend Play Enhances Learning

Sharing, Caring, and Responsibility

We know kids learn through play and that a strong imagination can be indicative of a bright future. Kids like to copy what they see their parents doing and one place parents spend a lot of time is in the kitchen. Childrens kitchens let kids pretend to be adults. It's one way kids get to relate to how much work is involved in taking care of a household. Because many of these kitchens are large enough for sharing, they are prime opportunities for kids to learn how to play with others, how to bounce ideas off of others and how to feed off of the creative energy of their friends.

How to Choose the Best Kitchen Playset

Age Ranges, Options, and Materials

There are lots of kitchen play sets on the market - so many that you'll have no problem finding one that will keep your kids enchanted as soon as they open the box. However, these are the kinds of toys that can last several years and through several children if you keep a few things in mind.

When comparing these play sets, focus on materials, features, and quality construction as well as the following:

  • Kids will quickly lose interest if there are not cupboards, doors that open, knobs and other moving parts. A unit that is nothing but stickers representing kitchen appliances and accessories won't cut it for long.

  • Some units come with kitchen pots and pans and pretend food and some don't. To get the most out of childrens kitchens make sure that the model you are buying either comes with some or buy some separately. You can even save things from around your own home to build a small supply of accessories - egg cartons, empty cereal boxes, old measuring cups, plastic bowls and plates.

  • Buy age appropriate kitchen play sets. Some have removable pieces that would pose a hazard to small toddlers.

  • Construction time on wooden kitchen sets generally takes longer but is well worth it. Many prefer the solid construction of a wooden set over the hard plastic of competitive kits. Just keep the assembly time in mind if you are hoping to have this set up in time for a special holiday.

Read the reviews written by other consumers and look for the safest kitchen with the most features within your budget and your kids will surely get a ton of use from the set.

Stop and say hi!

Do you remember the childrens kitchens of your youth? Somehow ours survived four kids and 6 years and all of us remember how much fun we had with it and how we used it to pretend we were in our own kitchen, running a restaurant, or operating a drive-through. Too much fun!

Sometimes, I feel like feminist groups should protest against toy stores. As a parent who's ALWAYS in a toy shop 2-3x a week, I pity little girls who don't have any cool toys to choose from other than domesticated pink stuff like kitchen, baby care, and lousy princess stuff...

But I did like my sister's kitchen set when I was 5 LOL.

What wonderful hours of fun you have here! My sister and I used to play in our "kitchen", an old pantry and an Easy Bake Oven. My Dad decided the oven had to be made inoperable when my Nikki was old enough to play with it. I like how you encourage purchase of age appropriate kitchens and supplies.
