Child Care Education - Learning Through Play

How do you decide on children's day care, pre school and their education and development

Pre-school is a crucial time in child development. Many parents use Pre-school, infant education and care services. This seems to be a natural consequence of busy lives, career moms, and the need to make ends meet. Known by different terms around the world Day care is an important feature of modern family life.

Every approach to child care and child deveopment is based on an underlying philosophy. Dr Benjamin Spock for example based alot of his ideas on the psychological approach called  behaviourism.

This led him to claim such things as that comforting a crying child merely 'rewarded' the crying which in turn led to more crying. So the best advice would be not to comfort the child. I'm not sure that many people would endorse that approach today. Other theoreticians took a different approach notably Piaget , Vygotsky, and Erikson

These theoreticians have all influenced the approach of people who have set up day nurseries and infant education schools. So it would seem like common sense to have a general understanding of the main ideas in order that the owners and their pedagogic principles can be understood.

Child development and pre-school education is too important to abdicate entirely to others. Of course this raises the Nurture versus Nature debate. Regardless of this it seems clear that the environment in which an infant is placed will have important consequences for their socialisation, the development and nurturing of their curiosity, their communication skills, and their judgement of trust and risk.

Busy live means that a certain amount of responsibility for the development and security of child is given over to others who are skilled at child development and nursery education. Because these people are specialists it pays to have a good general knowledge about what services are available and also some insight into how young children learn and develop both individually and socially. This lens is a contribution to that goal. I really hope you find it useful.

This is a great book. Way back in the 1980s Howard Gardner recognised that conventional IQ tests only tested for one sort of intelligence. Sadly that legacy of measuring our kids still holds sway and fails to nurture and spot other types of intelligence. Professor Gardner talks about Musical Intelligence, Spatial Intelligence and his ideas are behind the notion of Emotional Intelligence promoted by Dan Goleman. Whilst this is not a 'push over' read it is written in an accesible style and should be essential reading for anyone setting up a Day Care center.

Pre School Education and Care Services in the USA

Useful Book
This comprehensive history describes policies and programs for the education of three-, four-, and five-year-olds in the United States from the colonial era to the present. It also traces efforts to make preschool education a part of the public school system and shows why these efforts have been rejected, despite increasing evidence that preschools are beneficial for all young children.

Find out more from Nursery Cam

Packed full of case studies and examples

Here's what they have to say about themselves:

Through monitoring traffic on nursery websites, NurseryCam has found that a lot of parents do their childcare research at night. "Ten o'clock at night is the peak hour," says Melissa Kao. "Of course, nursery managers are not on call through the evening so the site makes it possible for the nursery to do the marketing out of hours. Parents have a lot of time to browse during the evening and go to a lot of pages such as the facilities, fees, philosophy, curriculum and link through to the Ofsted report. They also like to request or download a prospectus online. Parents also like to use the websites to arrange a visit to the nursery."
