Let's Start Writing!

Please note: I'll be taking the week between Christmas and New Year's off from posting writing exercises. Enjoy time with your family, and check back on January 4 for the next set of things to try with young writers. Thanks for your support!

Welcome, especially to our newest visitors! Children's Writing Exercises are provided free of charge for anyone. The exercises are intended to help you get your younger or older children practicing writing. Whether you homeschool or are looking for just a bit of extra practice, you'll find weekly exercises right here. I update both of the exercise sets weekly on Monday mornings.

Please stop back each week for new writing ideas. You can bookmark this lens or sign up for the Squidcast so you'll get notification of updates.

And I'd love to hear from you. Feedback is always welcome. Feel free to leave a note on the guestbook or drop me an email.

Interested in Vocabulary Development?

We all know that students who have larger vocabularies are going to be better writers because they have more of the tools of language. We also know that students with larger vocabularies tend to do better on the big tests in high school.

I am nearly finished developing a FREE vocabulary building class on my website. It's a sample of a larger class, but you can get an idea about whether this sort of learning is right for your student. The free class covers ten words at the 4th-5th grade level and provides lots of feedback and practice to help students master the words. It also offers a pretest to assist with placement in the correct larger class (50 words in ten lessons).

If you would like further information and notification when the sample class is ready, please leave your contact information below, or you can email me directly at reading at allinfoaboutreading.com.

Writing Exercises for Older Students

Ready for More of a Challenge??

DAY 1: Grammar Workshop: Introductory Phrases and Clauses
Some sentences start off with a bit of information that sets the stage for the sentence. These are called introductory phrases and clauses. An introductory phrase is just a few words set off by a comma in the front of the sentence. An introductory clause is the same thing, only bigger and more complicated. A clause has a baby sentence inside it. Here are some examples:
  • Yesterday, I ate lots of watermelon. (phrase)

  • After we go to the movies, we will eat dinner. (clause)

Now it's your turn! Write ten sentences that have introductory phrases or clauses. Don't forget your capitals, commas and periods!

DAY 2: Write a story about traveling. Make sure your story has a setting, characters, a plot with a resolution, and lots of description. It should be at least ten paragraphs long, and don't forget to make new paragraphs when each character speaks.

DAY 3: Write a report about weather. Do some research in books, magazines or on the internet. Don't forget to cite your sources!

DAY 4: Write an essay about family traditions. Remember that you need an introduction, a body with at least three paragraphs, and a conclusion.

DAY 5: Write about holidays. Write for at least four minutes without stopping.

Encouragement Always Welcome!
