Interested in Vocabulary Development?

We all know that students who have larger vocabularies are going to be better writers because they have more of the tools of language. We also know that students with larger vocabularies tend to do better on the big tests in high school.

I am nearly finished developing a FREE vocabulary building class on my website. It's a sample of a larger class, but you can get an idea about whether this sort of learning is right for your student. The free class covers ten words at the 4th-5th grade level and provides lots of feedback and practice to help students master the words. It also offers a pretest to assist with placement in the correct larger class (50 words in ten lessons).

If you would like further information and notification when the sample class is ready, please leave your contact information below, or you can email me directly at reading at allinfoaboutreading.com.

Writing Exercises for Older Students

Ready for More of a Challenge??

DAY 1: Grammar Workshop: Parts of Speech 1

Why learn parts of speech? Actually there are lots of reasons. Parts of speech will help you decode new words-your mind treats words differently if you are pondering a noun or a verb, and understanding what those are is part of the process. Parts of speech also help you untangle long and complex sentences, which abound in higher-level reading and writing. The understanding helps you use words correctly so you don't sound like an idiot when you write. All good reasons to learn what seems to be trivia!

This week, let's consider adjectives. Adjectives are describing words. They appeal to the senses and tell how something looks, sounds, feels, tastes, smells and so forth. The color words are adjectives and so are many words that end in a "y," like stuffy, noisy, or pretty. The trick when writing is to use as vivid and specific adjectives as you can. Why say "big" when you can say "gargantuan"? See if you can find the plain vanilla adjectives in the sentences below and substitute in some more vivid and descriptive ones.

1. The store was big.
2. The small horse make a loud noise.
3. The tasty sandwich was made with cheese.
4. How can you listen to that awful music?
5. The cold room gave me shivers.

Day 2: Make a list! Think of words that tell about color. (Not color words, but words that tell about colors!) Write down at least ten.

DAY 3: Choose five of the words from yesterday's list and use them in sentences. Bonus points if the sentences all work together to tell a larger story.

DAY 4: Write three paragraphs about your favorite holiday.

DAY 5: Write about bananas. Write for at least four minutes without stopping.

The Writer's Toolbox

Here are loads of creative exercises to get your child writing...

I absolutely LOVE the Writer's Toolbox! This nifty set of activities seems to 'unstick' even the most writer's blocked student that I see. My own students particularly love the story-starters on sticks....choose one color to start the story off with a given first sentence, then choose another color to introduce a plot twist and a third that adds a 'last straw' to complete the plot. It really seems to help the kids get the idea of how to move from a simple descriptive story to one that truly has characters, setting, plot and resolution.

I highly recommend the Writer's Toolbox for young writers (and even adults!) of all ages.
