Children's Rights

What? Why? When?

To most people, children's rights conjures up situations of anarchy where children demand the most outrageous things from parents who are bound by the notion of rights to provide for them at all costs. Legally speaking however, children's rights are certain entitlements that children can make on parents, society and the state in order to increase their well-being. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989 is considered to be the primary legal document that lays down what these specific claims are -- most important of which are the right to life, survival, and development, the right to health and social security, the right to non-discrimination and the right to be protected from abuse and exploitation.

The Most Important Thing

At the heart of it all, is the acknowledgement that children are individuals and have the right to live and survive as such. They have a voice and have the right to be heard. They have opinions and have the right to express them. They are, thus in every sense of the word, human beings and have the rights that are enjoyed by virtue of being human.
