Child's Play Charity

Gamers around the world have banded together to bring a little joy to children in hospitals. Since 2003, Child's Play Charity has worked with children's hospitals to develop wish lists of videos games, movies and toys to supply the hospital play areas, but also to provide Christmas presents for hospitalized children. Some of the items are given to the kids to take home and some are kept at the hospital for everyone to enjoy.

How Did The Charity Get Started?

Child's Play was started by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins of the online comic strip Penny Arcade, which concerns itself with videogames and gamer culture. The original idea was to try to combat many of the negative stereotypes around gamers and gaming culture.

What About Sending My Used Gear?

Child's Play can't donate used gear directly to the hospitals. But you can sell it on eBay and then have the proceeds designated to go to Child's Play since Child's Play is a registered eBay GivingWorks charity. They then use the funds to buy new gear or to offset the costs of sending that $200,000 worth of games and gears out to the hospitals.

The Wish Lists

So how do you know what your local children's hospital wants? Child's Play has partnered with Amazon to make it easier not only for you to buy the items the hospitals actually want, but also make it easier to get everything to the hospitals in a timely fashion. You can check out the map on the Child's Play home page or head to the wishlists page at Amazon.

(Note that the link takes you my local children's hospital - The Children's Hospital Denver - but you can scroll through the list of hospitals down the left side of the page to find yours. Pick what you want to buy off the list and Amazon takes care of the rest.

The wishlists include lots of video games and movies, but if you're after something a little more virtuous, keep scrolling. You'll find toys, board games and books on the lists as well.

At Miami Children's Hospital they have xbox's, playstation's and wii's on wheels. It's an amazing thing to put a smile on someones face while they are really sick, especially with a child. This is definitely a great lens.

Check out my lens on Kids Over Kancer. It's about pediatric cancer awareness... it may surprise you a little bit :)
