Chimney Rock Park - A Weekend Getaway Or Destination Vacation

Back in the 1980's I had my first introduction to what was to become one of my favorite getaways. I visited the village of Chimney Rock for an afternoon while visiting relatives in nearby South Carolina. From that afternoon on, I was hooked to the alluring charm of Chimney Rock.

A year or two later when I visited again, I experienced Chimney Rock Park and the breathtaking views from the top of the rock. Now I have to tell you, I am terrified of heights, but up I go anyway to enjoy the view and to hike the trails. I can trade off my fear any day in order to enjoy the sights the park has to offer.

I hope you enjoy the little tour I put together here for you and consider a trip to Chimney Rock Park for yourself and your family. There truly is something there for everyone!

When traveling to Chimney Rock, remember to make time to check out beautiful Lake Lure which is that jewel of a lake that contributes to the spectacular view from the top of Chimney Rock.

Lake Lure was also developed by Dr. Lucius Morse, the visionary of Chimney Rock Park. He also had a dream of a resort town that sported hotels, golf, fishing and the likes. Since there was no lake in Hickory Nut Gorge he did what any visionary would do and that's create his own! In 1927 Lake Lure was completed, acquiring it's name from Dr. Morse's wife as a result of it's alluring beauty.

Lake Lure offers accommodations including cabin rentals, restaurants, fishing, swimming, boat tours and so much more!

Tucked at the bottom of the park of Chimney Rock is the village of Chimney Rock boasting a population of 175 folks. Virtually everyone who lives in the village makes a contribution to the charm of both the park and the village. The village brings us shops for souvenirs, antiques and other cool, unique stuff. You can dine at a variety of delicious and unique restaurants, relax during your stay at a bed and breakfast or perhaps in a rustic cabin you rented for your visit. You can also wander around along the river that meanders through town.

While the village is indeed small, I have wandered around all day and still felt like I could find more treasures if I stayed a little longer! The village and the people who live and work there are friendly, charming and eager to make you feel at home.

Chimney Rock Is Famous

See Which Movies Were Filmed At Chimney Rock Park

Did you know that according to the NC Division of Sports, Film and Tourism Development that beautiful North Carolina is the number three most film making states in the US? Chimney Rock Park and just down the road, Lake Lure, has hosted some famous film's locations.

The Last of the Mohicans, that romantic adventure of the 1990's filmed several scenes at Chimney Rock Park, particularly the climatic final scene of the movie, which was filmed at the top of Hickory Nut Falls.

A Breed Apart, a story about the potential extinction of the Bald Eagle and a recluse who is dedicated to saving the species filmed the outdoor scenes of this movie at the Rock.

Firestarter, based on the novel written by Stephen King and staring Drew Barrymore has a scene that is filmed at the parks front entrance.

And finally, who can forget that all time favorite heart tugging movie, Dirty Dancing staring the late Patrick Swayze? Well that movie was filmed just down the street at picturesque Lake Lure.

Just goes to show how alluring and famous Chimney Rock Park is!

Chimney Rock History

Lucius B. Morse And A Dream

Chimney Rock Park has a history that dates back to the late 1800's when the park was first opened to visitors in 1885.

In 1902 it was purchased by Dr. Lucius B. Morse and then was seriously developed as a park and vacation spot. The Morris family owned the ever evolving park until it was purchased in 2007 by the state of North Carolina who still owns it today.

An interesting read in more detail about this delightful park's history can be enjoyed at The History Of Chimney Rock Park.

Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering if anyone reading this would have the courage to actually sit out on this rock with the ground several hundred feet below, with nothing between you and the hard unforgiving ground except air and maybe a few rocks and trees to break your fall? Are these ladies crazy or what?

State Park Chimney Rock - A Nature Enthusiasts Dream

Bird watchers and bird lovers alike love the fact the park attracts many different bird species from lyrical songbirds to the wise old guy here in the picture.

A special attraction is the Peregrine Falcon. Once rarely seen, today there is a family of these amazing birds who can be observed flying through the air at speeds of 60 mph and diving up to 200 mph.

Something For Everyone - Other Points Of Interest

Chimney Rock Park truly has something to offer everyone.

If you have a group, whether it's students, a church group, home school group or maybe even a club, the staff here is just waiting to make sure your group has a great experience with all the nature programs offered at Chimney Rock Park.

Want to get married there? You can do that too!

Got Pets? Bring them with you! Pets are welcome at the Park.

Get Married At The Rock

Let The Park Host Your Once In A Lifetime Experience

The Park offers a variety of choices to celebrate this all important event. You can proclaim your vows on top of the rock or to the sound of falling water at Hickory Nut Falls as well as other unique choices.

They will help you with the sound of music from one of the parks entertainers or perhaps you prefer the more natural music of the birds, water and other no dress rehearsal necessary sounds of nature in motion.

The Village has several choices of pastors to offer to conduct your nuptials and the parks website can provide you with recommendations for planning this once in a lifetime event.

And the honeymoon? Check out some the links here on this lens for a variety of wonderful inns, lodges, cabins and rental homes for a romantic Smokey Mountain honeymoon.

Celebrating your wedding and honeymoon at Chimney Rock Park would surely provide memories you will treasure for a lifetime.

Rock Climbing At Chimney Rock Park

You Want Me To Do What??

Photobucket
While never in a million years could I summon the courage to scale even the smallest rock, it fascinates me that others seek to climb in order to experience the thrill as well as the satisfaction of reaching the top.

I think I will remain on the flat surface of the earth and get my thrills from the trails and observing those a little, OK a lot, braver than me! Geez, these people in this picture are brave, or maybe totally crazy, don't you think?

If you look at the very top of the photo here, you can see the Village of Chimney Rock, in miniature size of course.

Chimney Rock Weather

Visit The Park Any Time Of The Year

Photobucket
Chimney Rock Park is open year round and each season has it's appeal, depending on the individual travelers tastes.

Temperatures range from 43 to 23 degrees December through February. Springtime, March through May ranges from 30 to 67 degrees. The popular summer months of June through August are a refreshing 55 to 75 degrees. Those incredibly colorful fall months of September through November cool off to 34 to 68 degrees.

My hands down favorite time to visit for the scenery is in the spring when the rhododendrons, dogwoods and azaleas are in full bloom, but you can be sure any season is a great season to visit!

Been to Chimney Rock many times as I grew up in Western NC. Lived several years on Bald Mtn. off of Hwy #9 up Shuemont Road. Did you know at the top of Bald Mtn. there is a Little Chimney Rock. Most folks don't know about it but the locals on Bald Mountain know about it. Will try and get you a map to the old site and send to you to add to the lens. Very nice lens indeed and a great place to catch trout.
