Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and form life-long family bonds.  They are genetically similar to humans and serve as excellent models and resources to the biomedical research industry. Their close genetic relationship to humans has also led to their use as highly effective research models.  As a result, humans have received the benefits of lifesaving vaccines and medical therapies.

With new technologies and changing goals, many of these primates are no longer needed for research.  Because they are long lived (up to 60 yrs. age), the challenge has been where to place them for long-term, cost-effective care—especially those that have been used in infectious disease studies.    Chimp Haven provides for the retirement of these deserving individuals and assures that their social and long-term care and health needs are met.

Focusing solely on the welfare of the chimpanzees, Chimp Haven is a collaborative effort.  The citizens of Caddo Parish, Louisiana donated the land to Chimp Haven.  Six thousand individuals, corporations, foundations, and organizations from around the United States and several countries worldwide have given their support.  From medical research programs to the nation's major humane societies, the diversity of those who endorse Chimp Haven is broad. The United States government joined this impressive array of partners in 2002 when the National Institutes of Health (NIH) selected Chimp Haven to care for its retired laboratory chimpanzees.

Chimp Haven is built on 200 acres of prime forest property in northwest Louisiana where the climate and habitat are ideal for chimpanzees.  The facility has been designed by a team of architects working in consultation with chimpanzee experts, including veterinarians and biologists.  Chimp Haven serves as the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Construction began in November 2003. The first 31 chimpanzees retired from medical research arrived at Chimp Haven in April, 2005.  Puddin', Rita, Mason and the other chimpanzees are thriving in their new home!  The dramatic changes in their lives can easily be seen as they explore the natural forest environment, make a soft nest for sleeping, groom and socialize with each other, and form large family groups.  The success of these chimpanzees marks a turning point for all chimpanzees waiting in research facilities.
