1000 on the Front Lines

For Christmas this year, many ask me what I need, because I am a missionary. This year, I am asking that 1000 friends join the front lines here in China by going to www.WorldOutreach.org/donations, select Joy Neasley, and provide $10.00 per month as a monthly gift. Thank you, and Merry Christmas 2011.

#1 Ladybug

I am not really sure why this made number one, but it is literally the most viewed drawing on both my websites. This little guy was crawling around here in the back yard of a friends home in South China. I decided to draw him. ---joy

#2 Zinnia

This is what I would have considered my all-time worst drawing, but people seem to love it. I was dogsitting at a friends house for a week, and she had a lovely garden out back with butterflies everywhere. I just happened to snap a photo of this little guy as he landed on a miniature Zinnia. ---joy

#3 Canna Lily

Again, this is not what I would consider one of my best, yet it seems to rank high with the visitors to my websites. I had just arrived in South China, and took a week at a youth hostel to rest up. Across the street was a walkway and a park along the Pearl River. They had beautiful flowers everywhere. I was inspired to draw a few of the Canna Lilies.

#4 Flying Dove

I enjoyed drawing this one, but it was more of a sketch than a drawing. To me, a dove represents the Holy Spirit. ---joy

#5 Hope in HIs Hands

This one I really loved drawing. Someone came up to me and said that a friend had referred him to me and asked if I could help him. He had seen this picture in his dreams many many times. He wanted to know if I could draw it for him.

#6 CRT Portrait

This was a commissioned drawing from a member of my church back home. Her little one almost died in the hospital, and after a visit from the Pastors and a time of prayer, he recovered quickly and was able to go home despite what the doctors said. Today, he is a healthy little boy. ---joy

#7 Sweet Fragrance

I spent part of 2009 back in the USA recovering from a serious illness and surgery. I spent most of my time with this wonderful "seasoned" lady from my home church. When it came time for me to return to China, I wanted to leaver her with something special. I drew this for her. It represents 2 Cor. 2:15

#8 Christmas Melodies

At a Christmas party in 2009, my daughters brother-in-law played the piano beautifully. While taking photos I notice that he had unusually long fingers. To remember the music and how well he played that Christmas, I drew the photo I had taken. --joy

#9 Barking Tree Frog

from South China

2010 was my first summer to spend in South China. I kept hearing what I thought were dogs barking. Turns out it is the mating call of these little guys. I found one to draw at a nearby pond near Guangzhou, China.

#10 Bedside View

Bedside View was actually one of my first drawings. It was an card of encouragement to a friend. Once my drawing skills developed, I decided to redraw this one and see just how the drawing had developed. I was amazed as well as my friends. This one is the 10th most popular drawing on my websites. ---joy

Vote for your favorite drawing.

The drawings that made the top ten list really surprised me. I have other drawings that I really consider to be much better works. ---joy

The Missionary and the Artist ... Joy Neasley

I am a missionary and an artist. I was born in East Texas, but left at age 19. Eventually, I settled in Tennessee. Over the years, I have raised two children who now live in Tennessee. Missionary training began at RBTC in Oklahoma in September 2005, with graduation from the missions group after two years in May 2007. Then, after returning to my hometown, Clarksville, TN, I began preparations to head out to Northern China, which took place in May 2008.

Drawing is a new skill which started in Spring 2009. During a time of recuperating from an illness for several months, I found ample time to spend in prayer. Out of that prayer time, I began to draw and write cards for various people, in which, I was led to spend time in prayer. Before I was finished with these cards there were a little over 60 of them. They were very rough sketches, but none-the-less, what I was led to do. Through this process, I realized what He was doing, and I continued to draw and develop this skill, and still continue to grow and develop. These drawings are the result. As I travel through China for my primary purpose of ministry, I draw, creating a visual journal of what I see.

I really enjoy the drawing and the purposes for which God has placed this gift in my life. A whole new door has opened, and I am walking through that door, eagerly awaiting to see where the road beyond it leads.

In mid-May of 2009 I moved into Southern China. I love the people and the ministry work here. I still travel around China and work where needed in association with another ministry here, also. This year, to help share the people I meet with my friends and supporters back home I am working on The 110 Faces of China Drawing Project. I have six of these finished, and working hard to get more finished as time permits. I also have started a blog with regular updates about the people, myself, and the drawings. You can check out this and my blog," What is it like to be a Missionary Today", in the links on this Squidoo lens. I also have a Fine Arts America website (linked to this lens) where prints and cards of my drawings and photos are made available to everyone.

Thank you for your prayers and support!

Blessings,
joy neasley

They really are beautiful. Your intimacy with your subjects is quite extraordinary, which is one of the reasons I liked Barking Tree Frog the best, although Hope in his hands was a close second. What a wonderful ministry.
