No Greasy Chins!

Dust, Dust, and Dust Some More

There is absolutely no way around it, chinchillas MUST dust. The dust bath is one of the basic requirements for chinchillas. All too often I see pictures of greasy chinchillas and now I'm on a crusade to end it.

Dusting Your Chinchilla is Easy

Unlike other pets, chinchillas do not take wet baths but rather roll around is a special finely ground dust to clean their fur.

Follow these steps to keep your chinchilla looking and feeling great:

1. Cover the bottom 1-2" of a container with chinchilla dust

2. Place the container in your chinchilla's cage and watch the fun begin. Your chinchilla will roll and flip around in the dust.

3. Remove the container and dust after about 10 minutes. If your chinchilla urinates in the dust, throw out the dust and replace with new dust otherwise you can reuse the dust a few more times.

4. Repeat the process at least 2 times per week. You may need to dust more often in humid areas or seasons and less often in dryer climates. If you notice your chinchilla having dry skin reduce the frequency of dust.

What Kind of Dust and Continer Should I Use?

You can use any type of container that is large enough for your chinchilla to roll around in. Some chinchilla owners like to use a special chinchilla dust house, others use gallon glass jars, and yet others prefer open dish or metal pan.

The dust needs to be chinchilla dust so do not use sand. There are two brands of dust available, Blue Sparkle and Blue Cloud. Many people claim Blue Cloud Chinchilla Dust is the best and that is what most breeders use on their show chinchillas. You can use dust found at the pet stores labeled under Kaytee, Sunseed, or L&M Farms.

Helpful Tips

Allergies are no excuse for not dusting your chinchilla. Try leaving the room when dusting or use a painter's mask.

Only reuse the dust a few times. The more it is used the less effective it is.

Use a separate dust bath for every chinchilla cage.

Do not use scented dust.
