Chincoteague Island Virginia 

Chincoteague Island Virginia is a small, friendly island resort community. The island is known for it's well kept shops and art galleries where area artists display art such as paintings, photographs, decoys, bird carvings, sculptures. In addition, many shops display souvenirs, desserts, ice cream, wine, coffee, clothing, and outdoor gear.

Recreation includes shopping, swimming, sunbathing, fishing, clamming, bird watching, nature cruises, biking, hiking, boating, kayaking, miniature golf, pony watching, the pony swim, fireman's carnival, decoy, art and craft shows, seafood festivals and more.

The world famous Chincoteague ponies the main tourist attraction. The ponies, first presented in Marguerite Henry's bestselling book "Misty of Chincoteague" reside on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. They are the only wild herd of horses east of the Rockies. According to local legend, the ponies were refugees from one or more Spanish galleons which sank just off the coast. The discovery of wrecks of the Spanish ships the La Galga (circa 1750) and the Juno (circa 1802) have given the legend plausibility.

The Chincoteague Island Pony Swim, auction and Fireman's Carnival is the most popular island event. The carnival runs on weekends during July, and nightly during pony swim week.

Located nearby is Assateague Island, which is occupied by Assateague National Sea Shore and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.
