Why We Love Chincoteague Island...
Chincoteague is a family vacation paradise...
Friendly islanders, wide and clean ocean beaches, wild ponies, saltwater cowboys, Assateague Lighthouse, a national wildlife refuge, dining and lodging for every budget, wide sandy beaches with lifeguards plus lots of things to see and do make this the perfect "get away from it all" vacation destination.
PS...We have been vacationing at Chincoteague for 5 years and we still haven't done all the fun stuff yet!! You should give it a try sometime...it's peaceful, relaxing and easy on the budget.

My husband and I just visited Chincoteague first week in June 08. Stayed at the Comfort Suites, A-1 in every way, no complaints there, and I have traveled everywhere. Go to the reserve daily and get the extended pass, saw horses every day, we did, right off to the right entering in the reserve. Great photo ops everywhere. Beach, white sands, mild surf. Birdwatching supreme, also rare deer there on wildlife loop each afternoon after 4:00 Eat at the Village, and I think it was RJs, the best. The lighthouse is cool, but got taken away by those mosquitos, wear Deet all over. Shopping o.k. but go to a bunch of gift shops for T-shirts and get the best value. I make jewelry and there was a bead shop unadvertised in a video shop on main street if that is your hobby. Next time we will take the tours on boats. One turn-off all the signs coming in to pristine island and the construction of a new bridge that will mar all the views. Enjoy!

Watch the Chincoteague Pony Swim Video
After the swim, the ponies rest and then are driven through the streets of Chincoteague to the Carnival Grounds on Main Street. The following day some of the Ponies are auctioned to raise funds for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.
The unsold ponies swim back to Assateague Island the day after the auction.
It is common practice for some successful bidders to return their pony to the Island. These "saved" ponies cannot be auctioned again.
The 2006 Auction raised over $100,000 for the Firemen.
