Why We Love Chincoteague Island...

Chincoteague is a family vacation paradise... 

Friendly islanders, wide and clean ocean beaches, wild ponies, saltwater cowboys, Assateague Lighthouse, a national wildlife refuge, dining and lodging for every budget, wide sandy beaches with lifeguards plus lots of things to see and do make this the perfect "get away from it all" vacation destination.

PS...We have been vacationing at Chincoteague for 5 years and we still haven't done all the fun stuff yet!!  You should give it a try sometime...it's peaceful, relaxing and easy on the budget.

New Chincoteague Bridge Construction Update for August 2008 

Here is an Update that I received via email:

Good evening Chincoteague Bridge Subscribers,

I hope you are enjoying your summer. As August begins, work continues on
the Chincoteague Bridge. Crews have completed transmission line
relocations, restoring marsh grass and driving all the piles allowed by
the time of year restriction. In addition, crews have completed a mock
assembly of the movable bridge span components at the offsite
fabrication yard and disassembled it after prime coating the components.

In upcoming months, our progress will be more visible as you drive by
the project. The bridge's main horizontal support beams have been set in
place for 2/3 of the spans, and crews are currently working on wall
pours, forming retaining walls and pouring concrete. The first deck
pour is scheduled for early August.

Motorists traveling on Route 175 from the Wire Narrows Bridge to the
Main Street Intersection should expect multiple alternating lane
closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the beginning of October. These
closures are necessary for crews to receive equipment and materials for
the project.

New Roadside BBQ Opens in Chincoteague....Welcome, Woody's!!! 

It's official....the first of at least three new eateries in Chincoteague opened up this month.

Woody's is serving up some mighty tasty Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Hand-Cut Fries. Located on Maddox Boulevard near the entrance to Maddox Family Campground, the family owned BBQ features homemade everything and lots of personal attention for the food quality and customer happiness...and believe me they are getting lots of customers. Be sure and check it out.

Homemade Soups, Sandwiches and Salads made with top quality meats, cheeses and special breads. Only place on Island that features lots of Vegetarian options...Best food for the price on the Island. I bet I've made some restaurant friends MAD but it is true! Do not miss this favorite on Main Street next to Don's Restaurant. (Can you tell that I love this place??)1 point

My kid's love Bill's! So we eat there often. Something for everyone on the menu...lots of good seafood. Owners and staff work very hard to make Bill's one of the most comfy restaurants on the island. Phat Oysters. Steamed, Fried or on the Half Shell...this might be the best restaurant for oysters on the Island...at least it was the night of June 16, 2007. The Fried Calamari were good too!!!0 points

It's only open on the weekend. There is usually a volunteer guide at the top who will show and tell everything you ever wanted to know about the Lighthouse and the people who have lived in it's shadow. Also there is often a local artist exhibition at the base of the Lighthouse.0 points

Watch the Chincoteague Pony Swim Video 

If you look closely behind the crowds of people in the Video you will see the ponies coming ashore after swimming from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. Behind the ponies you can see some of the boats that wait for the ponies to swim across the Channel. If you have the cash...hire an experienced captain to take your family out in the Channel. It's alot more comfy than standing in Marsh Mud and swatting 'skeeters!!

After the swim, the ponies rest and then are driven through the streets of Chincoteague to the Carnival Grounds on Main Street. The following day some of the Ponies are auctioned to raise funds for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

The unsold ponies swim back to Assateague Island the day after the auction.

It is common practice for some successful bidders to return their pony to the Island. These "saved" ponies cannot be auctioned again.

The 2006 Auction raised over $100,000 for the Firemen.

We bought our daugter a portable DVD player before our Christmas Holiday. Normally the 7 hour car ride is my worst nightmare, however with the DVD player she was able to watch her music, play games and listen to her own music ... didn't here "Are we there yet" once.1 point

Weird Virginia Motorcycle Law You Should Be Aware Of... 

Every state in the Union has strange laws on the books and Virginia is no exception.

It is against the law in Virginia for two motorcycles to ride side by side on a public road. The fine is severe...up to $2500 and is considered a misdemeanor. If you must ride side by side don't do it in Virginia.

Recent efforts to change the law were rejected by a majority of Virginia legislators with no reasonable explanation given.
