Hope For Chinese Cooking Recipes!

Don't give up hope. I have found a great book for Chinese cooking recipes that I will share with you further down.

I would like to first look at why it is SO HARD to come by this information. I listed the possible sources above but how did I come to the conclusions that I did? Read a little further for a bit more of a history lesson. If you just want to skip to the good part that is alright as well.

Friends, Family and Neighbors

Chinese cooking recipes were difficult to come by in this form unless you had friends, family or neighbors that were Chinese. The benefit of having someone you know with a recipe is that you can taste the dish before you cook it. You could see it and smell it on a plate before you decided to make it for yourself.

One of the biggest problems is many of the Chinese cooking recipes handed out this way weren't always authentic. The recipes of Chinese cooking that were passed around were either someone's creation similar to dish or something that had been changed in some way from its original form. Although some of these recipes created tasty dishes, they were not true recipes of Chinese cooking.

Newspapers, Books and Magazines

With the printing press and publications came easily distributed information such as recipes. This allowed major manufactures to distribute recipes to their readers and subscribers. With such award winning recipes being distributed you could ensure new recipes regularly. Many times the recipe itself came with a picture and simple instructions to follow to make your meal look identical to the image.

Sadly the problem with this form distribution is that the recipes selected were not done so by the reader but by the publishing company. Chinese cooking recipes were rarely printed unless modified for the common reader's taste. Many times you could not even find recipes of Chinese cooking.

Online Cooking Websites and Forums

With the internet came a huge amount of resources and information. Recipes were quickly posted to food sites and forums to share with other people. The internet now hosts millions of recipes from every kind of food style and cuisine you can think of. Many times the recipes include tips or tricks to make the dish faster, easier, or tastier. Almost any recipe for any food for any appetite can be found.

With the internet comes a huge amount of information, unsorted and in its raw form. Recipes often show up as a list of ingredients and preparation instructions and that is it. Recipes are often copied from books, magazines, or food containers. Authentic Chinese cooking recipes that can be found are typically in Chinese or Mandarin making them impossible to read for many of us. If a recipe of Chinese cooking is found in English it has to have been translated or simply created by someone's best guess. Anonymous and random posting of recipes means the credibility of such poster is still unknown as is the flavor, style and enjoyment of the recipe.

Newsgroups and E-Mail Lists

Recently the availability of newsgroups and E-mail lists have allowed individuals to sign up and either receive information from a newsgroup or receive an E-mail from a website with new recipes. Usually this is in conjunction with a website about cooking and recipes. This has greatly improved finding Chinese cooking recipes because you can locate website and forums that have specific areas devoted to recipes of Chinese cooking.

Again the internet has the problem of authenticity and quality of the recipe. Chinese cooking recipes are still hard to find in English and there are so many re-hashed recipes that you never know if what you are getting is a good recipe or not. Another downfall is these sections for recipes of Chinese cooking are usually small and don't contain the wide variety of Chinese cuisine. They also typically lack images, tips and tricks.

Online Specialty Cookbooks

Real and Healthy Chinese CookingThe combination of the internet, gourmet traditional Chinese chefs and easy distribution methods has given rise to cookbooks focused on Chinese cooking recipes. The new technology allows recipes to be printed in a readable document. These online books are inexpensive, written by professional chefs and contain so many recipes a different meal couple be made each night of the week for an entire year without any repetitions.

These types of books are still hard to find even though they are on the internet. Finding a good one that is well written, has plenty of tips and tricks to help you along the way as well as pictures is almost impossible to find. If you do find one it is typically very specialized and can be insane in price.
