The Chinese Cultural Revolution: A History by Paul Clark
A groundbreaking study of cultural life during a turbulent and formative decade in contemporary China, this book seeks to explode several myths about the Cultural Revolution (officially 1966-1976). Through national and local examination of the full range of cultural forms (film, operas, dance, other stage arts, music, fine arts, literature, and even architecture), Clark argues against characterizing this decade as one of chaos and destruction. Rather, he finds that innovation and creativity, pro...0 points
Born Red: A Chronicle of the Cultural Revolution by Yuan Gao
"In Born Red, Gao Youan, a former Red Guard . . . tells us what it was like to be one of Mao's children in a provincial town four hours by train south of Peking. It is a terrible story, demonstrating that Mao and his crazed coterie were able to cripplee Chinese society for ten years, as well as cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, because they had plenty of help from the masses."-Politics

Liu Shaoqi and the Chinese Cultural Revolution (East Gate Books) by Lowell Dittmer
By addressing the issues that decimated China's monolithic elite in the late 1960s, this text illuminates not only the life and fate of Liu Shaoqi, but also the policy-making process of a revolutionary state facing the diverting exigencies of economic modernization and political development.0 points
Red: China's Cultural Revolution by Jiang Jiehong
China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was launched by the Chinese Communist Party in May 1966 and it ended with the death of Mao in 1976. The ten years of upheaval can now be seen as a great tragedy, which has been acknowledged within China itself as a 'cultural desert' in the nation's intellectual history. The scale of the human cost is unknown. The extent of the physical loss of the national heritage was huge. However, as a mass movement in which an unparalleled visual experience was i...0 points
Rhetoric of the Chinese Cultural Revolution: The Impact on Chinese Thought, Culture, and Communication (Studies in Rhetoric/Communication) by Xing Lu
Now known to the Chinese as the "ten years of chaos," the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) brought death to thousands of Chinese and persecution to millions. Rhetoric of the Chinese Cultural Revolution identifies the rhetorical features and explores the persuasive effects of political language and symbolic practices during the period. Xing Lu examines how leaders of the Communist Party constructed and enacted a rhetoric in political contexts to legitimize power and violence and to de...0 points
Blood Red Sunset: A Memoir of the Chinese Cultural Revolution by Ma Bo
In a startlingly vivid, strangely objective, personal narrative, Ma Bo, who was denounced as an "active counterrevolutionary" in 1968, opens a window on the Chinese psyche that no work of history can provide, telling a passionate tale of a humanity that survives against all odds--a tale of ideology and disillusionment that will speak to all readers.0 points
Roles of Cultural Revolution Posters
Cultural Revolution posters offer a great variety of pictures that have great value in Chinese history. For instance, Mao has called on every youth of China to build a new nation according to his own thought & classic Marxist and Communist thought. The posters, accordingly, depict young people and students as taking part in all sorts of political activities.
Another aspect of these propaganda posters is their delineation of women. Almost all posters have women doing some great things to change the society. These posters are rather bold in color but they show a vivid picture of the changing times of China. The posters show the Red Army in action, students as selfless and persevering soldiers etc.

Red Guards and Gang of Four - Who Are They?
Red Guards were a mass movement of civilians, mostly students and other young people in China, who were mobilized by Mao Zedong in 1966 and 1967, during the Cultural Revolution.
The Gang of Four was the name given to a leftist political faction composed of four Chinese Communist Party officials. They came to prominence during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and were subsequently charged with a series of treasonous crimes. The members consisted of Jiang Qing, Mao Zedong's last wife and the leading figure of the group, and her close associates Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen.

TOOL OF MAO
In general, Mao Zedong picked the Red Guards, their function that is. They traveled throughout China going to schools, universities, and institutions spreading the teachings of Mao. They had a darker side however, as they were violent and oppressive to those who went against the teachings of Mao, or those who criticized him.

Lin Biao - "Cold" Man or Hero of the Cultural Revolution ?
Personal Profile
(Lin on the right side of Mao Tse-tung in Yenan)
Lin Biao (1907-1971)
Veteran of Chinese Communist wars against Kuomintang and Japanese forces. Served under Mao Zedong as member of China's Politburo, as Vice-Chairman (1958) and Defense Minister (1959). Lin is widely credited as the architect of China's Cultural Revolution and was responsible for the development of Mao Zedong's "Little Red Book." Lin was designated as Mao's successor in 1966 but fell out of favor in 1970.
Unsolved Death Cause
CNN---The power play that led to Lin's death in 1971 remains largely a mystery. Some historians suggest that Mao had become uncomfortable with the power Lin and the army had acquired and planned a purge. In this scenario, Lin and his high military commanders, sensing Mao's treachery, plotted a pre-emptive coup d'etat.

The official version was that Lin was afraid Mao had turned against him and plotted to have Mao assassinated. As if to lend credence to this account, Lin's own daughter was reported to have exposed her father's plot. If true, her betrayal was in the spirit of the times, when children were encouraged to rat on their reactionary parents. The political zeitgeist Lin helped create had apparently in turn provided the conditions for his own downfall.
Whether Lin died in a plane crash while trying to flee to the Soviet Union or was killed for his role in the plot may never be known for certain. Almost the entire high military command was purged within a few weeks of Lin's disappearance.
