Wonderful pictures and a wonderful diary for your future reference as you look back on life in China. I have been to several wet markets throughout the world and just love the freshness of the fruit and vegetables, but have to admit I don't handle the animal side very well. We have Asian markets where we live and they are enormously popular - no animals!

Just love the exciting Asian markets!

Fantastic!!! To think that we've exchanged all of this for supermarkets... Great lens

Very good lens! I have never seen anything like it and enjoyed it a lot!! Thank you.

Reminds me of some markets I visited in Thailand, great memories, blessed this lens!

Absolutely fascinating! Thanks for the beautiful photos that made me feel like I was there!

This so reminded me of the Piata's (same as a wet market) in Romania. The pictures took me back to my years of shopping in the local markets, but they didn't have eel and frogs, nor was rice one of the top sellers. This is a great article and your tips are right on! Blessed with pleasure :)

Gorgeous chronicle of a typical Chinese wet market-shopping trip! Thanks for letting us tag along. This is an excellent guide for expats living in China. ~Blessed~

I have never enjoyed grocery shopping more, thanks for taking me along. Thanks for answering why it is called a wet market, I kind of thought that would be it. I love the tip about complimenting on the vegetables, a smile does get us through these little times. I would guess the Chinese vendors chuckle at westerners quite a lot at our different ways of doing things. I sounds like rubberized shoes would be a good choice. I found it interesting that they shop for only two meals at a time there. Wonderfully ad informatively done!

As my brother and family prepare to move to China, I am really enjoying your lenses. A couple of questions:
What will be the best way to ship items to them? My sister-in-law was told that it's difficult to find books written in English. I suggested an e-reader, but I would send books occasionally for my nephews. She knows the number and neighborhood of the home where they will be living. How do you write addresses? You can respond off lens if you choose dianmcharp@aol.com

very impressive lens. I've lived in China for 12 years, so I've seen my fair share of wet markets, but to others who are sorely ignorant about China, this is fascinating.

I felt like I traveled with you to the market. Thank you for the excellent photo tour. You anticipated my questions and answered them. Love the colorful food displays.

Your lenses are always so amazing and wonderful Jimmie. The way you describe the markets, it's almost like we were there with you. 5*****

Thank you for the guided tour around the market Jimmie. I had a lot of fun.
  • miss_marple Jun 26, 2009 @ 1:57 am | delete
Fantastic lens and great photos. I am afraid we, the western world, have lost so much in the name of progress. We have forgotten what food should actually taste like and where it comes from.
  • thenaturalmd Jun 23, 2009 @ 4:50 pm | delete
Very nice! I loved the photos and the great explanations. This is a great lens! 5*s.

Fabulous lens Jimmie, thank you for inviting me to take the tour. PS I want the fruit tricycle to drive around our local farmer's market...that would be so much fun!
  • fastpassport Jun 9, 2009 @ 3:44 pm | delete
Excellent lens. I like the way you divided the food groups and provided handy tips about buying and transporting food from the wet market. From the photos, I can see that the vegetable market in China is very similar to markets in other countries I have visited.

    What a great lens!

Fascinating! Love the pictures. I feel like I am there! Hadn't thought about soaking vegetables in vinegar before, either. Good idea.

Fantastic photographs Jimmie! I felt like I was right there with you! I've been to indoor markets in Europe and the smell of fish in one almost made me faint! I love roaming through these places though. Please can I come shopping with you?

Fantastic lens on a wet market. You will not see much live animals in the wet markets in Singapore because our government banned live chickens since the bird flu started. There is only a handful of wet market you still can find live fishes. Usually when we said wet market, it is a market that sell meat and vegetables, something fresh. when we said dry market, it is usually those that sell dry, preserve food only, example, mushrooms.
  • Spook May 23, 2009 @ 3:56 am | delete
Really fantastic lens and would love nothing better than going with you to a wet market.
  • EverythingMouse May 22, 2009 @ 10:41 am | delete
So now I realise what a wet market is. Amazing photos. Not sure I could go there for real as I am a vegetarian!
  • charlino May 17, 2009 @ 9:29 am | delete

What a fabulous tour - we have weekly farmers' markets in Pennsylvania where I live, and you are so right, the muck and walking are worth the freshness and the very experience of shopping from the source. Lovely lens!
  • ottoblotto May 15, 2009 @ 2:34 pm | delete
I'm so hungry after reading this lens! Really well done.
  • CherylK May 15, 2009 @ 7:28 am | delete
This is a wonderful lens. The pictures are really good although I scrolled quickly past the rabbit & chicken :-). Also, I learned a lot. Great job.
  • LindaJM May 15, 2009 @ 1:26 am | delete
I'm a vegetarian so I could have done without all the animal pictures, but the fruits and vegetables are impressive. What a colorful variety! I'd love to be able to shop there. 5* and blessed.
  • Sylviane_Nuccio May 14, 2009 @ 7:48 pm | delete
It's beautiful, but the picture of that poor little rabbit wants to make me cry :(
  • stargazer00 May 14, 2009 @ 6:48 pm | delete
The fruits and vegetables look so good! Being so fresh I bet the taste is amazing. Beautiful lens!
  • BevsPaper May 14, 2009 @ 6:38 pm | delete
Incredible lens with very good information!
  • Joan4 May 14, 2009 @ 1:47 pm | delete
What an education ! Your pictures are beautiful. It's hard to imagine grocery shopping this way. I enjoy a fresh veggie and fruit stand, but all that meat outside like that all day? That would definitely give me pause! A Joyful Angel blessing!
  • annetteghallowell May 14, 2009 @ 9:34 am | delete
I love wet markets! Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory. It actually brought back not only the visual memory, but the sounds and smells as well. All of my wet market photos are on 1 of the 2 external hard drives that crashed with most of my Asia photos on them! 5*

That's exactly why I have to be careful in taking my daughter! She is especially tender towards the rabbits.
  • bdkz May 13, 2009 @ 3:33 pm | delete
This is an amazing look into the Chinese Wet Market. 5 Stars and a Squid Angel Blessing!
  • 24websurf May 13, 2009 @ 1:34 pm | delete
I can see me now.. buying all the animals for pets. The veggies look great!
  • Evelyn_Saenz May 13, 2009 @ 1:01 pm | delete
I love all the sights and can imagine the sounds and smells of the Chinese Wet Market. It reminds me so much of the markets in Costa Rica.

What a wonderful lens! Thank you for sharing.
