Chinese Kites
I've really focused in the past 7 years on building up my collection of Chinese Kites. Though it tends to sporadic, sometimes I go searching for a particular design, sometimes I just come across one that takes my fancy!. My current favorite is a beautifully intricate butterfly kite that stands out head and shoulders amongst my other Chinese Kites
I can't exactly describe what the specific attraction of Chinese Kites over other types of kites is. I think possibly it's due in part, to the history of Chinese Kites, as they originated from China, but also because of the integration into the art and culture of China itself that kites have.
Sometimes I buy pre-made Chinese Kites (but not the cheap, tacky plastic imitation ones you see for pennies in the mass market stores!). Sometimes I will see a particular style or design, then go searching for a set of plans that resemble, or at least, closely assimilate, the particular kite I want to build.
Overall, the main thing I keep in mind, when looking for a new kite or kite plan, is 'Is it aesthetically pleasing to the eye?', ie, 'Do I like the look of it?'. If I can answer that particular question with a resounding 'Yes', then none of the other factors really matter!
